Xiaomi the leading smartphone and smart TV manufacturer has recently rolled out its own IPTV service for its Mi and Redmi smart TV series in India. OnlyTech was quick to spot this service and review it in its early days. The service is called PatchWall+ which derives its name from Xiaomi’s own customised launcher called PatchWall that it has built on top of Android TV which curates content from 25+ different apps.

PatchWall+ offers a good mix of Indian and International free to air (FTA) channels. The service is currently ad-supported and does not provide any pay channels. Indian channels like Zee news, India TV, ABP news, etc are available in the news genre, 9X Jalwa and 9X Tashan in the Music genre. International channels on the service include Pulse and Fashion TV in the lifestyle genre, Sports Grid and Edge in the sports genre.

The user interface of PatchWall+ is very well organised with channels segregated into relevant genres which can be navigated through the left and right multi-purpose keys on the remote. The switching between channels is also very smooth using the up and down multi-purpose keys. Pressing the center key loads the list of recommended popular channels. The easy-to-use UI makes it a viable alternative to DTH and Cable TV for cord-cutters who just need access to FTA live channels.

As for the streaming Video quality it varies from channel to channel. Indian news channels have SD quality whereas most of the International channels are streaming in HD quality. Some of the channels like Docubay are not currently working and throw up an error when loaded, these may be early teething issues that may get resolved in the days to come.

It's actually a pretty good service. The mix of international channels is also nice and the streaming video quality is very good. There is a Docubay channel as well but that wasn't playing when I checked. And they have segregated the channels by genre nicely and the switching between channels is as good as on DTH STB which is usually not the case for IPTV service. (It's available on my Redmi TV running Android 10 but not yet available on my Mi TV running Android 9)
