Starting today, landline users will now be required to add the prefix ‘0’ before dialing a mobile number from their landline connections. The change in dialing pattern has set into effect from today in line with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) circular late last year.

DoT in a tweet on January 13, 2021, again publicized the modification in dialing pattern to increase awareness around the change. DoT had initially back in November 2020 planned to implement the change from 1st January 2021 directing access providers to make necessary changes. DoT had also advised access service providers to make necessary announcements to increase awareness around the change.

Landline users will be required to add the prefix ‘0’ before dialling a mobile number from January 15, 2021,” read DoT’s tweet on Twitter.

DoT had later in December extended the timeline for service providers to implement the change allowing them an extra 15 days time period. The change in dialing pattern will free up numbering resources up to 2254 million to cater to future requirements of this country.
