Nokia G42 5G with 6.56-inch HD+ display, triple rear cameras, 5000mAh battery launched

HMD Global launched the Nokia G42 5G smartphone on Wednesday. The phone features a 6.56-inch HD+ display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 SoC, triple rear cameras, 5G connectivity, and comes with an IP52 rating for dust and water resistance. The company promises to deliver two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates. The phone runs on the Android 13 operating system out of the box and supports a face unlock feature and fingerprint sensor for biometric authentication.

To make Nokia G42 5G consumer repairable, HMD has partnered with iFixit to provide guidance and phone parts online. Users can order the display, battery, charging port, and back cover online via iFixit or Nokia website and repair the phone themselves.

The Nokia G42 5G features a 6.56-inch HD+ (1612 x 720 pixels) LDC display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, 90Hz refresh rate, and 560 nits of peak brightness. The display comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 chipset paired with Adreno 619, up to 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of onboard storage. It also supports a microSD card of up to 1TB for expandable storage but uses a hybrid SIM slot.

In terms of optics, the Nokia G42 5G sports a triple rear camera setup of a 50-megapixel primary sensor with f/1.8 aperture, a 2-megapixel macro sensor, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. For taking selfies and making video calls, the phone has an 8-megapixel camera housed in a waterdrop notch display. The phone packs a non-removable 5000mAh battery that supports 20W fast charging technology.

Connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi6, Bluetooth v5.1, GPS, NFC, 4G LTE, 5G SA/NSA, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a USB Type-C port for charging and OTG support. Sensors include an accelerometer, proximity, magnetometer, and a side-mounted fingerprint reader. Lastly, the phone measures 165mm x 75.8mm x 8.5mm and weighs 193 grams.

Pricing and availability

The Nokia G42 5G is priced at EUR 199 (Rs. 17,800 approx.) for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. There is also a 4GB RAM and 128GB storage variant launched in some countries, but the pricing details are unknown. The phone comes in So Grey and So Purple color options. According to the company, the Nokia G42 5G will be available in India within the third quarter of 2023.
