The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hasn’t yet assigned the reserved 4G spectrum to BSNL/MTNL. DoT had reserved a certain quantum of spectrum for assignment to state-owned telecom service providers BSNL and MTNL for providing 4G services.
The pending assignment will be completed after the completion of necessary formalities in accordance with the Cabinet approval, said DoT in a note.
Additionally, the request of BSNL regarding assignment/re-assignment of spectrum in 900/1800 MHz band is still under consideration in DoT. BSNL/MTNL continue to hold a certain quantum of spectrum in 900/1800 MHz bands. The duo had last year surrendered a combined 58.8 MHz 900/1800 MHz bands ahead of Spectrum Auction 2021.
The Telecom Department has maintained the status quo in both cases. Last year, as well DoT reiterated the same position in both cases.
Lastly, DoT’s note mentions that Bharti Digital Networks Private Limited (BDNPL) (formerly known as Tikona Digital Networks) merger with Bharti Airtel still hasn’t been taken on record by DoT as certain issues are sub-judice before the Hon’ble Supreme Court.
BDNPL holds spectrum in 2300 MHz in 4 LSAs namely Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh (East), and Uttar Pradesh (West) LSAs which is being used by Bharti Airtel in pursuance of the order of Hon’ble TDSAT. The spectrum holding of BDNPL continues to be taken as a part of the total spectrum holding of Bharti Airtel for the limited purpose of spectrum cap without prejudice to the pending judicial proceedings.
