It has been close to two weeks since the official launch of iOS 10 and the iPhone 7, and Apple’s iMessage App Store has grown to over 1,650 apps and sticker packs – according to marketing intelligence company Sensor Tower as reported by Tech Crunch. The iMessage App Store was launched with around 402 apps only.
With the launch of iOS 10, Apple allowed third-party iMessage apps to be integrated via its dedicated App Store. It is now possible for users to play games, send stickers among other things to other users. According to the Sensor Tower report, the most popular type of app are ‘sticker packs’, of which the store includes 1,251 different versions. Out of these 944 are paid downloads, while only 307 are free.
Some popular sticker packs available include cartoons and animations of famous people like Justib Beiber and Kim Kardashian.
“Apple pitched iMessage apps as its means for transforming the ubiquitous messenger into a nexus for communication, whether it be chatting with friends, booking flights, or planning a night out,” said Sensor Tower, Head of mobile insights Randy Nelson, in a blog post.
Apple wishes to bring users back to its native messaging app by introducing add-ons to enhance user experience, and bring them back from using other popular apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. It is also now possible for users to send handwritten notes, give quick responses using tapbacks, have emoji suggestions, and more. Gaming is the second most-popular app type on the iMessage App Store, with at least 91 apps available to download. Entertainment, Utilities and Productivity apps follow.
