MediaTek has launched the Dimensity 1080 5G chipset as the successor to the last year’s launched Dimensity 920 chipset. According to the company, the chipset offers performance improvements and significantly upgraded camera features compared to the previous-gen SoC.
The MediaTek Dimensity 1080 5G chipset uses a 6nm TSMC fabrication process and comes with an upgraded octa-core chipset with two Arm Cortex-A78 CPU cores clocked at up to 2.6Ghz and six Arm Cortex A55 efficiency CPU cores clocked at up to 2.0Ghz. Further, it includes an Arm Mali-G68 MC4 GPU, the same GPU present in the MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset.
In terms of photography, the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 5G chipset can support up to 200-megapixel primary camera, and the Imagiq image signal processor (ISP) technology can deliver high-quality pictures and videos. The chipset also incorporates a hardware-accelerated HDR video recording engine that can process videos at up to 4K resolution.
The Dimensity 1080 5G SoC comes with HyperEngine 3.0 gaming enhancements that provide improved performance and better connectivity, while the integrated AI processing unit 3.0 (APU 3.0) ensures optimal power efficiency. The chipset supports LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, and a full-HD+ 120Hz variable refresh rate display.
Connectivity options supported are sub-6 GHz 5G networks, Wi-Fi 6, GPS/ Glonass/ Galileo/ QZSS, and Bluetooth version 5.2 technology. According to MediaTek, the Smartphones powered by the Dimensity 1080 chipsets will be available by Q4 2022.
Reportedly, Redmi Note 12 will be one of the first smartphones that will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1080 SoC.
