Founded by Jack Dorsey in March 2006, the run has been pretty strong for the social networking site. While celebrities embraced the network with gusto as it provided them a chance to connect with fans on a real-time basis, the common man was not left far behind. Today Twitter boasts of a total follower list of over 200 million users globally. And if this figure stumps you, there are over 400 million tweets being sent out via twitter daily!

Unlike Facebook, which is considered Twitter’s biggest rival, Twitter likes to keep it short and sweet. There’s no millions of ‘about us’ sections to be filled or no controversies about timeline, graph search and those million other changes Facebook keeps making. For Twitter, the shorter, the better. You can choose as innovative a Twitter handle and say what you want.

Apart from connecting users to friends and celebrities, Twitter also gives latest trends and news. The # made popular by the social networking site is used to stress on a point. The # comes with multiple options and is often used to popularise a concept or even to promote contests on Twitter.

While the run so far has been good, Twitter is still nascent and we wish this social networking site a long online life!
