Now star has all the three rights of indian cricket team-broadcasting rights, series rights and sponsorship rights

Star wins Indian team's title-sponsor rights

STAR India have won the Indian cricket team's title sponsorship right outbidding Sahara India. The Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the sponsors after opening bids in Chennai on Monday. The rights are from 2014 to 2017. Sahara India are the current team sponsors and their contract with BCCI expires at the end of December. STAR are the broadcaster partners of the Indian cricket Board.

Keeping current market trends in mind, the BCCI slashed the base price to Rs 1.5 crore per match this time. Sahara had been paying Rs 3.34 crore per international match since July 1, 2010. Sahara outbid Airtel in 2010 to extend its sponsorship of the Indian team. Three years ago, the BCCI base price was Rs 2.5 crore per match. Sahara secured the rights by paying Rs 3.34 crore to Airtel's Rs 2.89 crore per international game.

The last date for buying bidding documents was on Saturday. Among the five major companies buying the bid documents were STAR India, Multi Screen Media, and the UB Group. Sahara were late entrants after reportedly sorting out their differences with BCCI president N. Srinivasan. In October this year, after the Board had terminated Sahara-sponsored Indian Premier League team Pune Warriors over franchise fees, Sahara had decided to sever all links with BCCI. But in a dramatic turn of events, Sahara bought the bid documents. The reduced base price was apparently another factor for Sahara to change their mind.

STAR and MSM already have links with Indian cricket. STAR are the BCCI's host broadcasters and also have series sponsorship rights for all home matches till March 2014. MSM is the BCCI's broadcast partner for the IPL. United Breweries have an IPL team - Royal Challengers Bangalore.

According to source close to the BCCI, who did not wish to be named, of the seven who had bought the tender document, only Sahara and Star put in their bids for the logo rights. It is understood that Sahara India Pariwar, the current rights holder, who had bought the bid document, was found technically ineligible by the BCCI marketing committee, as it is involved in legal wrangles with the Indian board.

The sponsorship that will include all BCCI, ACC and ICC events will span from January 1, 2014 to March 31, 2017.

nts to own Indian cricket, it appears. The Rupert Murdoch owned 21st Century Fox India offshoot STAR India has bagged the title sponsorship rights to team India. Two bidders were in the final running – Sahara and Star India – the former was disqualified leaving Star with the title sponsorship.

This was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) through a tweet a short while ago.

A release sent out by the BCCI says that the team sponsorship will be “covering BCCI events, ICC events and ACC events, for the period 1 January 2014 to 31 March 2017.”

Rights include the right to be called the “Official Team Sponsor,” and to display a commercial logo on the team clothing of the Sr. Men’s Cricket Team, the U-19 Men’s Cricket Team, the Men’s A-Team and the Women’s Team.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the BCCI’s Marketing Committee, on 9 December 2013.

The tender document, which was available from 11 November 2013, was picked up by seven prospective bidders. Bids were accepted until 3:00 pm on 9 December 2013, at which time the bids were opened and evaluated.

Two bidders – Star India and Sahara India Financial Corporation – were in the fray. Sahara’s bid was found to be ineligible.

“Star is the Title Sponsor for BCCI international and domestic matches for the period October 2013 to 31 March 2014, as well as the Holder of the Broadcast, Internet and Mobile Rights of cricket in India, for the period July 2012 – March 2018. Star has a deep understanding of the game of cricket, and what it means to the nation. We are pleased to extend our association with them,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.

“Star is delighted to become the Official Sponsor of the Indian cricket team. It’s a team of brilliant talent and we are proud to be associated with them. This is further endorsement of Star’s deep commitment to Indian cricket and Indian Sports in general,” said Star India CEO Uday Shankar.

Sources indicate that Star bid Rs 1.92 crore per match for a bilateral series, and Rs 61 lakh per match for ICC-sponsored tournaments.
