TRAI

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet on Monday approved the appointment of Gujarat cadre IAS officer, Dr. PD Vaghela, as the new Chairperson of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

Dr. Vaghela will succeed the incumbent RS Sharma who demits the office on Wednesday after serving as the TRAI Chairperson for five years.

Vaghela is currently the Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals and 1986 batch IAS officer. Vaghela coincidentally was to retire on the same day RS Sharma demits his office as the Chairperson of TRAI.

Vaghela has been appointed for a period of three years or until he attains the age of 65 years, or until further orders, whichever is the earliest.

RS Sharma was appointed as the TRAI Chairman in August 2015 with a three year tenure. The Center had further offered him a two year extended till he turned 65 making him the first TRAI Chairman to serve for a tenure of five years.
