Walt Disney’s streaming service Disney+ Hotstar subscriber additions continued its strong growth for the quarter ending December 31, 2020 with Disney+ Hotstar now making up approximately 30 percent of Disney+ global subscriber base. Disney+ had 94.9 million paid subscribers at the end of the quarter with Disney+ Hotstar amounting for around 28 million odd subscribers around the world.

Disney+ Hotstar however dragged Disney+ ARPU. Disney+’s overall ARPU for the quarter stood at $4.03 whereas excluding Disney+ Hotstar, it was $5.37. Disney said that Cricket was a very important part of a diversified programming strategy at Disney+ Hotstar apart from other local content. Disney saw a bump during the IPL season with Disney looking at one-year subscription versus month-to-month to mitigate the churn one could expect from IPL.

Disney+ Hotstar currently offers a VIP subscription at Rs 399 for a year and Premium subscription at Rs 299 on a monthly basis and Rs 1499 for an annual subscription. The company is believed to be on verge of bringing in a price hike to its VIP subscription tier with certain users seeing new pricing within the app.
