The Department of Telecommunications is considering allowing Vodafone Idea and other telcos to surrender spectrum acquired before 2022 to reduce financial burdens. This move, aimed at ensuring a competitive telecom sector, could save Vodafone Idea around ₹40,000 crore and bolster its viability.

@Esmail bro, which spectrum you think VoId may return? They have some extra spectrum in costly 900MHz after the merger like 14MHz in Mah, 12.2MHz in Haryana, 12.4MHz in Kerala, 11MHz in Gujarat & Mumbai. I guess they may keep 10MHz and return the excess. But will that make any huge difference in reducing the payment to Govt?

Or you have some other views bro?

Yes even though 900 MHz is the costliest band they own, there is limited spectrum that they can surrender in it. Major bulk may come from the mid bands 1800 and 2100 MHz where they may retain 10 MHz and surrender the rest. Vi has a low subscriber base now that most have ported out to Jio and Airtel so they don't need as much mid band spectrum.

From September the moratorium on AGR dues is ending and Vi doesn't have the funds to pay for it and not much equity left to offer the government either. So they will have to take tough calls.

I'm hoping even Rcom and Aircel use this opportunity to surrender their liberalised spectrum which they are no longer using so as to reduce their capital outgo and more spectrum could become available in upcoming auctions for Jio and Airtel to buy as well.

Airtel and Jio won't buy band 1 spectrum at all. Jio won't for sure. Airtel might buy in West Bengal or Kolkata where they don't have band 1 spectrum. Airtel and Jio might want to make band 3 20Mhz in most of their circles, that's where this return comes into picture. But again, how Vi can survive without these bands, I am not sure. Airtel will definitely bid for band 3 in their leadership circles where band 3 is just 10 or 15Mhz, Airtel will make it 20Mhz. Jio will most probably make band 3 20Mhz in most possible circles and move band 40 to 5G.

After this let's hope aircel can surrender B3 10Mhz and B1 5Mhz in TN. So that it can be put to auction.
