Nokia to launch 4.9G technologies by the end of 2017

Nokia said that it will introduce its 4.9G technologies by the end of 2017, allowing telecom operators to dramatically enhance their network performance and manage the significantly higher infrastructure demands on the path to 5G .

The Finnish telecom gear maker said that a 4.9G massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna will also increase cell capacity by up to five times, while a new 4.5G Pro AirScale Micro Remote Radio Head (RRH) will allow operators to take advantage of unlicensed spectrum to enable Gigabit speeds.

"Nokia 4.9G will provide significant increases in capacity and several Gigabits of speed-per-second on the path to 5G. The introduction of the AirScale massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna is a milestone in the delivery of 4.9G, driving capacity increases for megacity deployments," the company said.

The AirScale massive MIMO launch complements Nokia 4.9G Cloud RAN technology.

A range of AirScale Active Antennas will complement Nokia's existing commercial Radio Antenna System. In addition to the AirScale massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna, the AirScale Compact Active Antenna will provide an even leaner site solution that increases performance and lowers operators' costs.

Nokia said that it will also make 4.5G Pro Gigabit data speeds a reality now for operators with limited and disparate blocks of spectrum, while allowing them to densify networks with the commercial introduction of a new AirScale Micro Remote Radio Head (RRH). This will allow macro sites to leverage unlicensed spectrum using Licensed Assisted Access (LAA).

"Nokia introduced 4.5G Pro and 4.9G last year to allow operators to implement network capacity increases where and when it made sense for them. Now we are delivering features that will maximize their resources, speed deployment times and cut power and costs especially in the most densely populated locations. We are making 4.5G Pro a commercial reality now and working with customers to innovate with solutions to their network densification and evolution challenges in 4.9G and beyond," Frank Weyerich, head of Mobile Networks Products at Nokia, said.

Reliance Jio sends Valentine’s day wishes to Airtel, Vodafone and Idea on Twitter

Mukesh Ambani-driven Reliance Jio wished Airtel , Vodafone and Idea Cellular a Happy Valentine’s Day on Twitter . The telco from its official Twitter handle wrote,” Dear @airtelindia, @VodafoneIN, @ideacellular, Happy Valentine’s Day. #WithLoveFromJio”.

The tweet was posted on 14th February at 10:00 AM. None of the mentioned telcos have replied to the tweet so far. However, the tweet has started to get attention with people calling it ‘the tweet of the day’.

Reliance Jio seems to be engaging in a war of wits on Twitter by coming up sarcastic and witty tweets addressed to its incumbent telcos.

Earlier, Jio had seized one such opportunity when Amitabh Bachchan tweeted about issues with Vodafone’s SMS service. The telco on Twitter addressed Bachchan and offered him a Jio SIM.

Reliance Jio also has an ongoing war with the top three telcos over the points of interconnection (PoI) issue where it has also involved itself in a brutal war of words, especially with Airtel.

Last week, Jio called India's number one telco's statement on providing sufficient PoI as 'malicious and misleading'. Jio said that 2.6 crore National long distance (NLD) calls are still failing daily due to the issue, amounting to 53.4% call failure (as on 31-Jan-2017) as against TRAI norm of 0.5%.

Bharti Airtel had also knocked on the doors of the Prime Minister’s Office, complaining that Reliance Jio Infocomm’s constant “rhetoric” over inadequate points of interconnect (PoIs) is untrue. The telco said that Jio’s calls are failing to go through because of glitches on the new entrant’s network.
