Lahore, May 21 : Under-fire Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Ijaz Butt tried hard to defend the decision of sacking Shahid Afridi as captain of the ODI team stating that it was done in the best interest of the side.
Butt, however refused to reveal the exact reasons for it.
Afridi was replaced by his Test counterpart Misbah-ul-Haq for the tour of Ireland.
"It is the board's right to change the captain and the decision was taken in the best interests of the team." Butt was quoted as saying by the 'Express Tribune' in response to mounting criticism over his decision.
The swashbuckling batsman's remarks, where he stated that 'everyone in the team should mind their own business', did not sit well with the PCB, following which he had to wash his hands from the top job.
"Captains are changed all over the world and no cricket board gives a reason for that," Butt said.
"We did what we thought was best and do not need to give a reason for it," he added.
Meanwhile, the PCB has also decided to keep a close eye on Afridi's performance during the Ireland matches. The hard-hitting batsman and leg-spinner has seen a dip in performance and claimed two wickets in five ODIs and scored 28 runs in three innings against the West Indies.
