Melbourne named opening
ceremony host for ICC World Cup 2015

Melbourne was on Friday named as
the host of Australian opening
ceremony for the International
Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup 2015.

Two opening ceremonies for cricket's
marquee event will be held 12
February , with co-hosts New Zealand
to stage their opener on the same
evening in Christchurch.

The Melbourne celebration at Sidney
Myer Music Bowl will involve World
Cup players and legends, cultural and
music performances, a spectacular
fireworks display and a yet-to-be-
revealed "special moment".

Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport
and Major Events John Eren said
Melbourne would now be the scene
of the opening event, the first match
on Australian soil when Australia play
England Feb 14, and the final at the
Melbournbe Cricket Ground (MCG)
March 29.

"We are delighted that Melburnians
and visitors from all over the world
will have a chance to attend this
once-in-a-generation event at the
Sidney Myer Music Bowl," Eren was
quoted as saying by Cricket Australia
(CA) website.

John Harnden, World Cup 2015 chief
executive, said the event would get
the tournament off to a "great start".
The opening ceremony will be free to
attend and tickets will be available to
the public on a first-come, first-
served basis.

Each applicant can request up to four
tickets and further details of the
ceremony will be revealed closer to
the event.

Christchurch's opening event will
feature some of New Zealand's best
known performers, cricket legends
including Richard Hadlee and Stephen
Fleming and a special segment to
recognise the rebuilding of the city
following the disastrous earthquakes.

England have announced their squad
for the ICC Cricket World Cup, 2015.
Eoin Morgan, the experienced left-
handed batsman, will lead the unit.
Ian Bell and Gary Ballance have
found a place in the squad. However,
Ben Stokes, the Durham all-rounder,
and Harry Gurney, the
Nottinghamshire pacer, haven't been
included.

England will depend on their able
pace duo of James Anderson and
Stuart Broad to fire on all cylinders
on quick tracks of Australia. In the
batting department, Moeen Ali,
James Taylor and Joe Root will be
expected to perform. Earlier, Alastair
Cook, who has been England's ODI
captain since 2011 was dropped from
the set-up.

The squad will take part in a tri-
series in Australia ahead of the
mega-event. In the World Cup,
England will take on traditional rivals,
Australia, in their first game on
February 14 at Melbourne Cricket
Ground (MCG).

James Whitaker, the National Selector
said: "I would like to congratulate all
players on their selection and wish
Peter [Moores], Eoin [Morgan], and
the squad all the very best.

Representing England in a World Cup
is a huge honour and responsibility,
something all the players recognise.

"There have been a number of
promising performances from players
in recent series, and it is important
that this squad continues to develop
their one-day skills quickly and
players start to show the sort of
consistency needed to succeed
regularly on the world stage,"
Whitaker summed up.

Lasith Malinga expected to be fit
before 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup:
Marvan Atapattu

Sri Lanka's pace spearhead, Lasith
Malinga, is recovering well from his
ankle injury and should be fit to
resume bowling during the later
stages of the ODI series against New
Zealand, according to head coach,
Marvan Atapattu.

"Malinga is still recovering from
surgery and everything is going well
according to plan," Atapattu said.
"He will return for the last two ODI
games in New Zealand."

Malinga underwent a surgery on his
left ankle in late September and
consequently missed the ODI series
against India and England. The 31-
year-old pacer, who bowls with a
slingy action, is crucial to his team's
hopes during the upcoming 2015 ICC
Cricket World Cup, to be jointly
hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Stuart Binny confident about his
selection for 2015 ICC Cricket
World Cup

Having gained an extra yard of pace
in his bowling, Karnataka all-rounder,
Stuart Binny, is confident about
finding a place in the final 15-
member Indian squad for the
upcoming 2015 Cricket World Cup, to
be jointly co-hosted by Australia and
New Zealand.

The all-rounder has had limited
opportunities with the national
squad. He has featured in just three
Tests and six One Day internationals,
ever since making his debut during
the tour of New Zealand in Jan-Feb,
2014.

Three games into the 2014-15 Ranji
season, Binny was happy with his
bowling although he conceded that
he could have done a lot more with
the bat, having had starts in 3 of the
4 innings so far. The 30-year all-
rounder was very impressive with the
ball during the ongoing match against
Railways, finishing with 2/18 from
eight frugal overs.

"I have actually gone up on my pace
in the last 8-10 months. After
entering international cricket, I
realised I need to step up on the
pace. I worked a bit in the gym and
the run up is harder than last year.

The results are showing," said Binny,
when asked about the extra pace he
has gained recently.

"I have got a bit stronger in the legs.
I was bowling consistent 125 kmph
and I have added 3-4 kmph to that.
The stronger legs have helped me run
in harder than earlier," he said.

Binny has had starts with the bat and
was a bit disappointed that he
couldn't carry on to make a big
score, his 77 against Tamil Nadu,
proving to be an exception. "I am
happy with the way I have batted (in
the recent domestic matches) but
pretty disappointed at not being able
to convert starts. It doesn't help my
case but my rhythm has been good,"
he added.

Michael Clarke confident of playing in ICC Cricket World Cup 2015

Australian captain, Michael Clarke, is
confident of making a return to
international cricket, after he
underwent a surgery on his torn
hamstring. The 33-year-old set alarm
bells ringing with a stark warning that
the injury sustained during the first
Test against India in Adelaide could
cut short his stellar cricketing life.

However, in an upbeat column for
Sydney's Daily Telegraph, Clarke gave
a positive assessment, a week after
the operation.

"The biggest thing for me is getting
back on the field for the World Cup.

I have been told by medical staff that
I am in as good a condition as I can
be a week after undergoing the
surgery," Clarke said of the
tournament that starts in Australia
and New Zealand in mid-February.

"There is no swelling and no pain
when I walk. I can't wait to begin
stage two of the rehab process which
involves starting to run again," he
added.

He offered strong support to fellow
veterans, Brad Haddin, Shane Watson
and Chris Rogers, who have come
under pressure for weak
performances since the start of the
four-Test series against India, this
month. With Australia leading India
2-0 ahead of the third Test in
Melbourne on Friday, he also backed
them for the 2015 Ashes squad to
face England.

"It's crucial to have experienced guys
like these in a team when you're
bringing through youngsters. I hope
all three of them are on the plane to
England for next year's Ashes series.

They bring so much more to the
table than just their batting," Clarke
summed up.

Misbah-Ul-Haq: Will go to the ICC Cricket World Cup with a positive mindset

Misbah-ul-Haq expects Pakistan to
go into the ICC Cricket World Cup
2015 with a positive frame of mind
despite the bowling suspensions of
Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez
and his own hamstring injury. The
41-year old also pointed out that
injury problems to key players like
himself, Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and
some others were, however, not
helping the buildup to the World
Cup.

"Their (Ajmal and Hafeez) presence is
key to performing well at the World
Cup and I am hoping that their
actions will be cleared in time for the
event. As far as my fitness is
concerned, I am taking it easy at the
moment to allow the hamstring
injury to heal properly," Misbah said.

"But I am pretty confident I will be
back on the field atleast three to four
weeks before the World Cup to get
into the proper mode. I am hopeful
that I will be fully fit for the event
and I'm raring to get back on the
field much before the World Cup," he
added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Cricket Board
Chairman, Shaharyar Khan, backed
his injured skipper to recover in time
to lead Pakistan. "This is the first
time that Misbah has copped an
injury in his career and he is working
hard to recover from it and I am
confident he will be ready in time for
the World Cup. He is a thorough
professional and when he says he if
fit, I'll be ready to back him all the
way," Shaharyar was quoted as
saying.

In Misbah's absence all-rounder
Shahid Afridi led Pakistan against
New Zealand in the ODI series, which
Pakistan lost 2-3. "The one-day series
losses to Australia and New Zealand
were setbacks ahead of the World
Cup. But there were also, lots of
positives from these matches, the
batting of Sarfaraz Ahmed, Haris
Sohail turning into a proper all-
rounder and the form of some of our top-order batsmen," Misbah opined.
