Sunil Gavaskar all praise for India's World Cup squad

The Indian selectors on Tuesday
included all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja,
still recovering from a shoulder
injury, and Stuart Binny in the 15-
member squad for the World Cup.
"The Indian batsmen are capable of
putting a lot of runs on the board.
Batting has been India's strength.

But the fact that we won the last World Cup and the Champions Trophy on the all-round performance, so the Jajedas, Binnys, Ashwins could play a role in India defending the title," said Gavaskar.

"India's batting looks good and as far
as bowling is concerned, if they can
bowl well on the surfaces in
Australia, they have a good chance,"
he told a TV news channel.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan, who
struggled in the ongoing Test series
against Australia, has also been
retained in the squad, and Gavaskar
feels he is a better choice over Murali Vijay in the limited-over format.

"The World Cup is 50-over format
and this is the format which will suit
Dhawan more," he pointed out.

The fans have taken to the social
networking sites after the World Cup
squad was announced on Tuesday,
criticising Stuart Binny's inclusion in
the side. His father, Roger,
incidentally is a member of the
selection committee.

But Gavaskar lashed out at the fans,
stating that he would have also
picked Stuart, irrespective of his
father being a former teammate.

"When I picked my 15, although I am
not even a selector, I had applied my
mind. I chose Stuart because on
those kind of surfaces (Australia and
New Zealand), he could come in very
handy with the seam bowling. As a
lower order batsman also or as a
floater. He can be pretty handy with
the bat.

Hafeez, Younis included in Pakistan WC squad; Gul misses out

Mohammad Hafeez, despite having
failed the unofficial bowling action
test in Chennai recently, has been
picked in the Pakistan squad for ICC
Cricket World Cup, 2015. Pacers,
Umar Gul and Bilawal Bhatti, who are
yet to fully recover from injuries,
have been left out of the side, while
Younis Khan has made it to the final
fifteen.

Nasir Jamshed and Sohail Tanvir, who
played against New Zealand recently,
have been axed from the side. The
other players from the squad that
played NZ who are not a part of the
WC squad are Anwar Ali, Asad Shafiq
and Zulfiqar Babar.

There was a surprise call-up for
Sohail Khan, the 30-year-old pacer
from Malakand. Khan had last
represented his country in Zimbabwe
in 2011. The right-armer, however,
bowled himself into contention
following some strong performances
in domestic cricket, including a haul
of 6/46 a day before the squad was
announced.

It runs in the Binny family

His late arrival for the selection
committee meeting to pick the squad
for the 2015 ICC World Cup did invite
speculation that he had recused
himself as his son was in contention
for a berth, but Roger Binny, one of
the heroes of India's famous 1983
World Cup triumph, made it clear
that he was delayed only due to a
'technical snag.'

"I was stuck at the Bangalore airport
as we were offloaded from the plane.

There is nothing more to it," Binny
clarified on Tuesday.

A BCCI official, meanwhile, made it
clear that Binny wasn't made a part
of the discussion when it came to
considering Stuart's case. "He stayed
'out of the room' like always, as we
deliberated on his son's inclusion,"
he said.

The senior Binny has in the past
himself said that he would 'walk out
of the room' when his son's name
would be debated in the committee.
Binny did admit, though that he was
'proud' that his son would play for
India in the World Cup. "Anyone
would be proud," he told TOI .

Roger and Stuart would thus become
the first father-son pair to play for
India in the World Cup, and the third
overall (Lance and Chris Cairns, Don
and Derek Pringle and Chris and
Stuart Broad being the others) to
achieve this unique feat.

Clarke recovery 'ahead of schedule' for World Cup

Injured Australia captain Michael
Clarke said Wednesday his recovery
from hamstring surgery was ahead of
schedule as he races against the
clock to be fit for next month's World
Cup. Clarke said he had begun
running since the surgery three
weeks ago, after suffering the injury
in the first Test win over India in
Adelaide almost a month ago.

Clarke, 33, is expected to be named
skipper of the 15-man Australian
squad when it is officially announced
on Sunday, but it is unclear when he
will be fit to return to the field.

Clarke has previously said he is
unlikely to be fit for Australia's
opening match of the tournament
against England at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground on February 14. But
Clarke said he was experiencing a
quicker-than-expected recovery and
could yet be ready to play.

Ajantha Mendis, Dilruwan Perera dropped; Senanayake included in SL WC squad

Sri Lanka have named their fifteen-
man squad for the ICC Cricket World
Cup 2015. Six players (Kusal Perera,
Ajantha Mendis, Thilana Kandamby,
Lahiru Gamage, Shaminda Eranga,
Dilruwan Perera) from the side that
played against England at home
recently have been dropped. The
squad named is identical to the one
touring New Zealand for seven ODIs,
with the exception of Shaminda
Eranga, who has been named 16th
man for the ODI series.

The squad is filled to the brim with
experience with the expected
inclusions of Mahela Jayawardene,
Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne
Dilshan, Lasith Malinga, Angelo
Mathews and Nuwan Kulasekara, all
of who played important roles in

India in 2011.

Malinga's availability, however, is
subject to the pacer proving fitness
ahead of the World Cup, according to reports.
