After rumors about WhatsApp working on video calling feature for past few weeks, the option was recently spotted in Android beta version (v20.16.80) of the app. However, the functionality has now been removed from the latest WhatsApp for Android beta build (v20.16.81). In the previous build, tapping the ‘call’ icon showed up two options – audio call and video call, but the option has now gone and tapping on the icon directly starts an audio call.

As of now, there is no official word on why the feature was removed from the latest build.

However, it would be safe to assume that the company may want its time to do some early testing. It may also be case that WhatsApp’s video calling feature may not be ready for a wider release, yet. While there is no word (or rumors) as to when WhatsApp plans to launch the video calling feature, the fact that it showed up in the beta version could be a hint that it may happen sometime in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp is also reported to working on bringing new features in the coming updates, which includes voice mail, callback and the ability to share ZIP files. Last week, the company also released native desktop clients for Windows and Mac OS X that mirrors the smartphone’s WhatsApp screen onto the PC. It’s working is similar to WhatsApp Web, and you’ll need your phone turned on and connected to the internet to use it. That’s not all; WhatsApp Web version also gets the ability to attach and share documents.

The company also recently turned on end-to-end encryption for its billion monthly active users with an aim to keep the conversations private – be it chats, voice calls or the media that is shared between users. However, the move has not gone well with government security agencies.
