Sachin Tendulkar, Waqar Younis make their Test debut

On this day, legends of the game,
Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis
made their Test debut at Karachi in
1989. Tendulkar then became the
third youngest cricketer after
Mushtaq Mohammad and Aaqib Javed
to make his Test debut.

Waqar, the fast bowler, known for his
searing yorkers at pace with the old
ball went on to take close to 800
international wickets.

In particular, in the early 1990s, he
took a lot of wickets by shattering
the stumps of batsmen. On the other
hand, Tendulkar went on to break
numerous records for his country.

On this day in 2013, batting maestro
Sachin Tendulkar ended his 24-year
cricketing career after India beat
West Indies in his 200th Test match
at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Tendulkar bid adieu in front of a jam-
packed crowd, on a day when billions
shed tears as the Master Blaster gave
his farewell speech. He also touched
the 22-yards in a thanksgiving
gesture. Tendulkar made a stroke-
filled 74 in India's first innings, his
last in international cricket.
Tendulkar retired with 34357
international runs, including 100
hundreds, the most by any player. He
was the first player to record a
double-hundred in ODI cricket.

Zimbabwe tie ODI against India


On this day in 1993, Zimbabwe were involved in their first tied ODI, and their opponents were India. It was the 7th hero Cup match, which was played at the Nehru Stadium in Indore. Asked to bat first, India managed a total of 248/5. Manoj Prabhakar, who opened the innings, scored 91 while Vinod Kambli and Mohammad Azharuddin also contributed with knocks of 55 and 54 not-out respectively. In reply, Zimbabwe kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were on the back-foot despite a fifty from Andy Flower. The middle order came up with useful knocks to keep their side in the hunt before being reduced to 218/8. Stephen Peall and Heath Streak took Zimbabwe closer, 12 short of the target, before Streak and John Rennie took the game to the final over with 10 required. Manoj Prabhakar bowled the final over and Zimbabwe were left with 2 needed off the final ball. Streak was run-out while attempting a second leg-bye, leading to the 7th tied game in the history of ODI cricket.
