Sehwag scores a ton on Test debut

November 3 2001 marked the arrival of Virender Sehwag, who scored a fine century on debut in the first Test against South Africa in Bloemfontein. India suffered a top-order collapse and were reduced to 68/4 when the swashbuckling batsman entered the ground and joined his idol Sachin Tendulkar at the crease. Sehwag was happy to play second fiddle to Tendulkar, but he did not remain in the shadows. If Tendulkar was doing what he does best, Sehwag followed his idol's advice to 'enjoy the moment'. Enjoy he did as he brought up a hundred in 157 balls and put on 220 runs with Tendulkar to help India post a total of 379.

However, their efforts went in vain as South Africa posted 563 before Shaun Pollock picked up a six-wicket haul in the second innings which helped South Africa to a 9-wicket win.

Birth of one of the keeping greats

Birth of the brilliant Australian wicket-keeper, Rod Marsh. He was pretty useful with the bat, but behind the stumps, he was perhaps one of the greatest ever to grace the game. A total of 355 dismissals (343 ct + 12 st) was perhaps just deserved. His combination with Dennis Lillee was to be treasured. Together, the pair accounted for as many as 95 dismissals, the highest number of dismissals for a keeper-bowler combine.

Start of Aussie dominance

..
The start of Australia's dominance.
Up against Pakistan at the Gabba,
Brisbane, Australia were helped
along by a magical 269-run stand for
the first wicket between Michael
Slater and Greg Blewett set them on
their path. Pakistan's 367 was made
to look inadequate as Australia
buried the visitors with an avalanche
of runs. On his debut, Adam Gilchrist,
blasted 81 while Shane Warne helped
himself to a cracking 86. Australia
finished on 575. Despite Saeed
Anwar's 119, Pakistan could manage
to set a modest target of 74, which
was knocked off by Australia's
openers.

South Africa play first match in 21 years

It was an emotional return to international cricket for the Proteas, who played their first match in 21 years, following the cricket team's suspension due to the South African government's apartheid policy. The match, which was also South Africa's first appearance in ODIs, took place at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta. Eleven players were making their debut in this game - it included ten South African players (Kepler Wessels had already played an ODI for Australia). Put in to bat, South Africa could only manage a total of 177/8 with Wessels (50) and Adrian Kuiper top-scoring. Allan Donald then ripped through the Indian top-order and even finished with a five-wicket haul. However, that was not sufficient for South Africa as Sachin Tendulkar scored a fine 62 while Pravin Amre hit 55 on debut before Manoj Prabhakar helped the hosts past the line. Tendulkar and Donald were jointly named the MoM.

End of a long wait for New Zealand

..
After a wait of close to 40 years,
November 11 1969 turned out to be a
historic day in New Zealand cricket
history as they clinched their first
ever series win in Test cricket. New
Zealand drew the first Test and won
the second Test by 5 wickets. It
looked as though Pakistan would
level the series in the third match
when they reduced the visitors to
101/8 in the second innings at the
Dacca Stadium. However, a 96-run
stand for the 9th wicket between
Mark Burgess and Bob Cunis left
Pakistan with a target of 184 in 37
overs. Only 15 overs were possible in
Pakistan's second innings before bad
light stopped play. The game was
called off an hour before the
scheduled close after a minor riot.
