Ear-piece tactic takes India by surprise

On this day during the 1999 World Cup
in England, South Africa introduced a
tactic that caught viewers, opposition,
commentators and officials by
complete surprise. In their opening
match against India at Brighton, Hansie
Cronje, the skipper, and coach Bob
Woolmer brought out a novel way of
communicating with each other during
a game by using a receiver and a
transmitter. Cronje, sporting an ear-
piece, was listening to the coach's view
while leading his men on the field and
so did pacer Allan Donald. It caught
the Indians by surprise. Sourav
Ganguly spotted Cronje talking to
himself and smelled a rat. He relayed
the information to the on-field
umpires who immediately brought it to
the notice of match refree, Talat Ali.
ICC was looped in by Ali and a decision
was taken immediately with the
players being ordered to remove the
ear-pieces cont ...

ICC was of the view that it
was a violation of protocol and said,
"The World Cup is not the event to
experiment with new devices without
first seeking permission from the ICC."

Denis Compton was born today in 1918.
Born in Middlex, England, Comtpon
went on to become a national icon
thanks to his superb ability with the
bat and also his good looks.

of the contries most consistent
batsmen, who also thrilled crowds with
a wide array of strokes and the ability

an average of 50.06 in 78 Tests. His

Birth of Ali Bacher

He was the face of South Africa cricket
after their re-induction to the
international arena. Ali Bacher initially
gained fame as the captain of the
South African team that whitewashed
Australia before going into forced
isolation. However he is best known for
his work as an administrator. Bacher
kept cricket in South Africa alive all
through the apartheid period by
arranging 'rebel' tours and also setting
up coaching camps for South Africans
of various ethnicity. He also set up
South Africa's cricket board and got it
recognized by ICC before getting them
back into the international fold.

England clinch a famous win;
Anderson gets 399

Ben Stokes starred in a famous Test
win at Lord's as England won a hard-
fought match by 124 runs. The margin
of victory hardly does justice to the
way New Zealand fought. They were
all out with 9 overs left in the game.
Ben Stokes slammed 93 and 101 - the
fastest Test ton at Lord's - and picked
up Kane Williamson and Brendon
McCullum off successive deliveries to
complete one of the most impactful
all-round performances in Tests.
Alastair Cook brushed off poor form
and criticism with a patient 162 - his
first at home in two years - and New
Zealand lost a match for the first time
despite scoring over 500 in the first
innings.

The Ganguly-Dravid show

Much before the advent of T20s and
high scores, Sourav Ganguly and
Rahul Dravid took the world by storm
in the 1999 World Cup. The duo shared
a then record stand of 318 in ODIs
against Sri Lanka in Taunton. Ganguly
slammed 183 - then the highest score
by an Indian in ODIs while Dravid
smashed 145. India racked up a
massive 373 after batting first. The
partnership remained a record for a
while before Dravid combined with
Tendulkar to break it. It remained a
record World Cup stand for 16 years.
