Brial Lara scores 501
With exemplary skills and records
walking hand in hand, Brian Charles
Lara carved a niche in the game of
cricket. Centuries are common, double
tons are great feats, a triple century is
a highly coveted mark. But, Lara took
individual contributions to a new level.
The only cricketer to have scored 100,
200, 300, a mighty 400 and an
unthinkable 500, it was on this day in
1994, only weeks after scoring a
terrific 375 against England, that Lara
notched up the highest individual
score in First Class cricket. Playing for
Warwickshire against Durham, Lara
raked up 501 to surpass Hanif
Mohammad's record of 499. Bowled off
a no-ball on 12 and dropped by the
wicket-keeper on 18, Lara faced 427
deliveries in 474 minutes at the crease
and hit 62 fours and 10 sixes during his
monumental knock. Lara's knock came
in reply to Durham's 556/8 decl. in the
first innings and the 501 powered
Warwickshire to 810/4 decl. The game
ended in a draw.
