27th May 1977

Birth of Mahela Jayawardene

One of Sri Lanka's all-time best
batsmen and one of the most elegant
batsmen that cricket has seen -
Mahela Jayawardene. The Sri Lankan
later became a shrewd captain as well
and led his team to two World Cup
finals. He even scored a ton in the 2011
World Cup final but it went in vain. His
partnership on and off the field with
Kumar Sangakkara is legendary and
fittingly the duo share the highest
Test partnership while Mahela
recorded the highest Test score (374)
by a Sri Lankan.

Ravi Shastri and Michael Hussey were
also born on the same day.

29th May 1999

Zimbabwe pull off an upset win in the
1999 World Cup

Zimbabwe went past the preliminary
stage of the competition for the first
time in their history after upsetting
South Africa by 48 runs. Chasing 233,
Neil Johnson and Heath Streak
combined to reduce their neighbours
to 40/6. The result was a foregone
conclusion then. South Africa had
already qualified for the Super Six
stage but this win cost them dear as
they did not carry over full points.
Zimbabwe stunned everyone by
qualifying first from the group.

31st May 1984

The best ODI innings - Viv Richards blasts 189

Viv Richards was at his brutal best in a
then world record individual score of
189 not out against England at Old
Trafford in 1984. The start was a poor
one for West Indies, who slipped to
102/7 and it soon became 166/9 when
Holding joined Richards. The legendary
last-wicket stand of 106 saw Holding
score just 12 runs while Richards
blasted 93 runs off just 57 deliveries.
Richards ended up with 189, which
came off only 170 deliveries with 21
fours and five sixes. His innings,
described by many as the greatest ODI
innings, helped West Indies to 272/9 in
55 overs. England had no answer to
Richards' onslaught and they lost by
104 runs with Richards also getting
amongst the wickets, picking up a
couple.

1st June 2008

The first IPL Final

The Indian Premier League has
changed the face of cricket drastically
over the years. What set the tone was
the phenomenal success of the first
edition in 2008. On this day, Rajasthan
Royals clinched a last-ball thriller
against Chennai Super Kings to win the
inaugural IPL. Yusuf Pathan scored a
stunning fifty while Rajasthan's
mercurial skipper Shane Warne was
there fittingly at the end to complete
the winning run. Royals' underdog-to-
glory story was a seminal moment in
cricket history.

2nd June 1965

Waugh brothers were born on this day

Two contrasting characters, but
equally effective. Mark and Steve
Waugh, who went on to become
legendary Australian players, were
born this day in 1965.

Happy Birthday two Champions Waugh Brothers....Steve Waugh & Mark Waugh :ohya :ohya :ohya :ohya
