25th April 2004

The lowest total in ODIs

On this day in 2004, Zimbabwe
snatched the ignominious record of
scoring the lowest total in an ODI from
Canada when they were bowled for 35
in 18 overs by Sri Lanka during a bi-
lateral ODI series. Going into the third
game of the five-match series with a
2-0 lead, Sri Lankan captain Marvan
Atapattu elected to bowl first on a
decent surface at the Harare Sports
Club, a decision that paid instant
dividents as Zimbabwe lost half their
side under 10 overs with only 19 on
the board. Bad turned to worse when
debutant Farvez Maharoof picked up
three wickets in three overs to bowl
Zimbabwe out for 35, one run lesser
than what Canada achieved against
the same opposition in Paarl during
the 2003 World Cup. Chaminda Vaas,
who ended with figures of 9-4-11-4,
was adjudged the player of the match
after Sri Lanka cruised to the target under 10 overs.

First T20 hundred in women's cricket

Fifth May 2010 was a historic day for
women's cricket as Deandra Dottin
registered the first hundred in
Women's T20 cricket. Coming in at
number six after West Indies suffered
a top-order collapse, Dottin went on to
reach the three-figure mark off only
38 deliveries and finished with an
unbeaten 112 off 45 balls to help West
Indies post 175/5. In reply, South
African women could only finish with
158/4, giving the hosts a 17-run win in
their T20 WC encounter.

Duleepsinhji scores triple ton

On this day in 1930, KS Duleepsinhji
came up with a special knock - he
registered his highest first-class score,
coming up with a classy triple hundred,
which he got in just over five hours.
Sussex, who opted to bat first, went on
to post a total of 521/7 decl thanks to
Duleepsinhji's 333, while MW Tate also
contributed with a nelson score,
scoring 111. Duleepsinhji's score was
21 more than what Northamptonshire
managed in two innings put together
as Sussex won the game by an innings
and 209 runs. Duleepsinhji's triple ton
was the fourth most runs scored by an
individual in a day's play in first-class
cricket. Brian Lara, who scored 390
runs in a single day en route to his 501
not out for Warwickshire in 1994, tops
the chart.

Gibbs fined for smoking marijuana

A six-month ban for his involvement
in match-fixing, a suspended sentence
for heading to a nightclub on the eve
of an ODI against Australia, Herschelle
Gibbs had a tumultuous 2000-2001
and to add to list of problems was
another incident, which led to him up
coughing a fine of Rand 10,000. On this
day in 2001, five South African players,
which included Gibbs, along with team
physiotherapist Craig Smith, were fined
for smoking marijuana during South
Africa's post-match celebrations
following their Test series victory
against West Indies. Roger
Telemachus, Paul Adams, Justin Kemp
and Andre Nel were the other players
who were found to be smoking the
drug in a hotel room following the
team's 82-run win, which gave them
the series.
