10th April 1990

Ambrose denies England series win

On this day in 1990, Curtly Ambrose
produced a bowling performance for
the ages on the final day of the Test
series at the Kensington Oval in
Barbados to deny the visiting English
side a series win. England, leading 1-0,
entered the final day of the series at
15-3 chasing 356. With Jack Russell
and Alec Stewart batting steadily in
the first session, England looked like
they could eke out a draw. Then
Ambrose happened. In a devastating
exhibition of fast bowling, the
Antiguan ripped apart the heart of
England's batting and ended with
career-best figures of 8 for 45. Despite
a fighting unbeaten 40 by Robin Smith,
England collapsed for 191, conceding a
164-run win to the hosts. Ambrose's
bowling efforts in Barbados would
serve as a precursor for many similar
bowling performances in the mid-90s
when the gentle giant would almost
single-handedly bowl West Indies to
Test match wins.

The big match-fixing scandal

On this day in 2000, 'match-fixing'
raised its ugly head in the world of
cricket with then South African
captain Hansie Cronje named as a key
perpetrator. After the New Delhi police
revealed that they had audio tapes of
Cronje and a bookie Sanjay Chawla
involving in talks about fixing a game
of cricket, Cronje vehemently denied
any involvement. However, after an
enquiry by the King Commission,
Cronje was banned from playing or
coaching cricket for life. Fellow South
African cricketers Nicky Boje,
Herschelle Gibbs and Pieter Strydom
were also implicated in the scandal.
Cronje appealed against the ban but
his plea was rejected.

Brian Lara 400 not out

On this day in 2004, Brian Lara took
back what had been his for a long
period of time before Matthew Hayden
briefly snatched it away from him -
The highest individual score in a Test
match - with a scarcely believable 400
not-out against England in the fourth
Test of the series at Antigua. With
England leading the four-match series,
3-0, captain Lara took the onus on
himself to avoid the ignominy of a
series whitewash. On a road-like pitch
at the Antigua Recreational Ground,
he pummelled the England attack,
scoring 43 fours and four sixes during
his 778 minute vigil. Riding on Lara's
400, West Indies posted 751/5 decl. By
the time West Indies called it time on
their innings midway through Day 3,
they'd all-but avoided defeat. Pedro
Collins' four-fer then allowed Lara to
enforce the follow-on but too much
time had been wasted in the first
innings and the hosts couldn't press
for a win.

Still I remember that match wow what a innings by " Prince of port of spain " :clap:hs:luv:tup:win:win:luv:clap:) ..

15th April 1986

Richards' blitz downs England

On this day in 1986, Viv Richards
slammed the fastest Test match century, off 56 balls, against an England attack featuring the likes of Ian Botham, Neil Foster, Richard Ellison
and John Emburey in front of his
adoring home crowd at St. John's,
Antigua. After Desmond Haynes' first
innings century gave West Indies a
164-run lead, Richards went berserk in
the second, hitting seven fours and
seven sixes in his unbeaten knock of
110 off 58 deliveries. Richards' blitz
allowed West Indies to declare on Day
4 and set England a target of 411.
Roger Harper then returned figures of
12-8-10-3 as England folded for a
measly 170 thereby losing the five-
match series 0-5. Vivian Richards stood
alone at the top of the fastest Test
match hundreds' list for 28 years
before Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq
equalled his record with an
astonishing century against Australia
in Abu Dhabi in the 2014-15 season.

17th April 1972

  • Birth of a spin legend

On this day in 1972, Muttiah Muralitharan was born in Kandy, Sri Lanka. Arguably the greatest spinner
ever, Muralitharan first shot into
prominence during the 1995-96 Boxing Day Test in Melbourne when umpire Darrell Hair no-balled him for chucking. After a couple of years of deliberation and action testing, he was
finally cleared to bowl with his action.
Murali, as he was affectionately called, could turn the ball on the flattest of wickets and possessed an exceptional 'doosra'. While he picked up truck loads
of wickets in the spin conducive
surfaces in the sub-continent, he
adapted slowly and became a master of his craft even in overseas conditions. He was constantly compared to another spin great, Shane
Warne and the two tussled for the top spot in the leading Test wicket takers list before the smiling Sri Lankan pipped Warne's tally of 708 Test wickets a month after warne retirement . He ended is carrear as 800 test wickets

Long Live Murali .. Happy bday wishes .. Very proud as a Thamizhan )

18th April 2008

The carnival begins
On this day in 2008, a T20 revolution of
sorts got underway in India, when the
first match of the Indian Premier
League was played in Bangalore
between the home side Royal
Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata
Knight Riders. For long, India had
remained fairly sceptical about the T20
format and then like a bolt out of the
blue, a young Indian team went on to
win the inaugral T20 WC in 2007.

23rd April 2013

The Gaylestorm
On this day in 2013, during an IPL
game against Pune Warriors India,
RCB's Chris Gayle shattered T20
records when he scored a maniacal 66-
ball 175 at the Chinnaswamy Stadium
in Bangalore. When Aaron Finch won
the toss and inserted the hosts in, he
would have never seen what was
about to come. Gayle got to his 50 off
17 balls and took only 13 more
deliveries to reach his century and
thus became the fastest to score a T20
century. Enroute his jaw dropping
innings, Gayle also struck 17 sixes, the
most by a batsman in a T20 innings.
Riding on Gayle's belligerence, Royal
Challengers Bangalore posted 263 for
5 in their 20 overs, the highest score in
T20s. The magnitude of Gayle's
achivements put into wayside even AB
de Villiers' eight-ball cameo where he
was striking at nearly 400. Gayle
returned with the ball and snared two
wickets as RCB completed a massive 130-run win. And gets MoM award.
