Lara stuns Australia in Barbados

On this day in 1999, a Brian Lara
masterclass took West Indies to an
improbable one-wicket win against
Australia in a exhilarating Test match
at Bridgetown, Barbados. Lara
remained undefeated on 153 and
shared crucial partnerships with Jimmy
Adams and Curtly Ambrose to give the
hosts a 2-1 series lead in the four-
match Test series. After Courtney
Walsh's second innings five-fer bowled
Australia out for 146 in their second
innings giving West Indies a fourth
innings target of 308, Sherwin
Campbell and Adrian Griffith got the
chase off to a solid start. Australians
fought back and soon 72 for none
became 105 for five. Lara then started
the memorable turnaround. He added
133 with Adams and had a heated
contest with Glenn McGrath. McGrath
then removed Adams, Jacobs and Perry
even as Lara got past 100. No.10
Ambrose survived six and a half overs
as Lara scripted memorable win

India end 28-year World Cup drought

On this day in 2011, India ended a 28
year World Cup drought by winning
their second title in front of a manic
home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium
in Mumbai. In a moment for the ages,
Indian skipper MS Dhoni clobbered Sri
Lankan pacer Nuwan Kulasekara high
over the long-on fence to spark
widespread celebrations in India. The
architects of India's triumph on that
night in Mumbai were Zaheer Khan,
Gautam Gambhir and Dhoni. In a
miserly opening spell, Zaheer
conceded just the six runs in five overs
banishing the ghosts of his nervous
first spell in the 2003 World Cup final.
Chasing 275 and despite being reduced
to 31 for two, Gambhir, as he had done
in India's T20 WC final win in 2003 world cup final.

Chasing 275 and despite being reduced
to 31 for two, Gambhir, as he had done
in India's T20 WC final win in 2007, top-
scored with 97 and shared a crucial
fourth-wicket stand with Dhoni (91*),
who had promoted himself above
man-of-the-series Yuvraj Singh to
negate the threat posed by Sri Lanka's
spinners. Sachin Tendulkar, who won
the World Cup in his sixth attempt,
called it the produest moment of his
life.

Australia survive Lara assault

On this day in 1999, barely a week
after his Bridgetown masterclass,
Brian Lara produced another hundred
against Steve Waugh's visiting
Australian side, except his 100 at the
Antigua Recreation Ground failed to
inspire his team in to a win. Australia,
who chose to bat on the opening day,
racked up 303 without a single
batsman going on to make a big score.
In reply, striking at over 120, Lara
scored a scintillating ton, his third of
the series. But once he was dismissed
(100 off 84 balls, 15x4 3x6), the rest of
the line-up collapsed tamely and
handed the visitors an 81-run lead.
Justin Langer then scored a century as
West Indies were set a target of 388.
Once Lara departed cheaply in the
second essay, the writing was on the
wall for the hosts and Australia
leveled the four-match series 2-2.
Lara, who scored 546 runs at 91.00
including a top score of 213, was
adjudged the player of the
tournament.

6th April 2014

Sri Lanka deny India a unique treble

On this day in 2014, Kumar
Sangakkara, playing his final T20 for
Sri Lanka, scored a fine half-century to
guide Sri Lanka to the T20 WC title in
Mirpur. Sri Lanka, who'd lost four
major finals heading into the title
clash against a rampant Indian side
produced an excellent bowling
performance to restrict a powerful
Indian batting line-up to 130 in 20
overs, despite a 58-ball 77 from Virat
Kohli. Lasith Malinga and Nuwan
Kulasekara were particularly
impressive at the death executing
their strategy of bowling full and wide
to the Indian batsmen. Yuvraj Singh's
agonizing 21-ball 11 snuffed the
momentum out of India's innings. Sri
Lanka's win also denied MS Dhoni's
men a unique opportunity of holding
each of the three main ICC trophies -
The World Cup, Champions Trophy and
the T20 WC simultaneously.

9th April 1995
21-year old Tendulkar gets 3000 ODI runs

On this day in 1995, Sachin Tendulkar
became the youngest cricketer to
amass 3000 runs in One-Day
Internationals when he cracked a brisk
century, his fourth in the 50-over
format, to guide India to a convincing
win against Sri Lanka in an Asia Cup
encounter in Sharjah. After Sri Lankan
skipper Arjuna Ranatunga elected to
bat, Venkatesh Prasad returned
figures of three for 37 to restrict the
Lankans to a sub-par 202. Tendulkar
then shared a 161-run opening stand
with Manoj Prabhakar (60 off 79) to
put the result beyond doubt. The 21-
year old Tendulkar displayed an
excellent front-foot technique dealing
with Sri Lanka's new ball bowlers,
Chaminda Vaas and Janak Gamage.
Riding on Tendulkar's century, India
reached their target with over 16 overs
to spare, thereby boosting their run-
rate and qualified for the final.
