Inzamam special knocks New Zealand out

After two semi-final exits, Pakistan
finally made their first World Cup final,
after beating New Zealand by 4 wickets
in the 1992 semi-final in Auckland.
Chasing a more than competitive 263,
Pakistan seemed to have left too much
to do in the final overs. However, a
brilliant onslaught from Inzamam-ul-
Haq (37-ball 60) sealed the match in
favour of Imran Khan's men, dashing
New Zealand's hopes in front of their
home crowd.

Australia's World Cup reign ends

On this day in the 2011 World Cup,
Yuvraj Singh ended Australia's dream
run at World Cups with a pulsating
half-century that knocked the four-
time champions out of the competition
in the quarter-final stage. On a warm
summer's day, Australian captain
Ricky Ponting compiled a solid hundred
to propel Australia to 260 on a two-
paced track at Motera, Ahmedabad. In
reply, Sachin Tendulkar scored an
equally classy 53 to get India's chase
rolling. Australia struck back with
quick wickets leaving India to get 74
off 75 with 5 wickets remaining. Yuvraj
Singh(57*), in the company of Suresh
Raina, then counterattacked and took
India home with over two overs to
spare, sparking wild celebrations. The
defeat ended Australia's pursuit of
winning a fourth world cup on the trot.
India progressed to the semi-finals
where they beat Pakistan. And srilanka in Final.

Matt Prior defies New Zealand

On this day in 2013, England wicket-
keeper Matt Prior scored a match-
saving hundred on the final day of the
Auckland Test to deny New Zealand
their first series win against a top team
for over six years. With the first two
games of the series in Wellington and
Dunedin drawn, New Zealand put
themselves in the drivers seat to win
the third Test riding on Peter Fulton's
twin centuries. Chasing a target of 481,
England entered the final day at 90/4
and were staring at a big defeat before
Matt Prior took it upon himself to save
the Test match. Giving him support
was a resolute Stuart Broad who
batted out 137 minutes and 77 balls
for his six runs. Part-time bowler Kane
Williamson then picked up four
wickets, including two in an over, to
bring England down to their final
batsman. Prior and Panesar then saw
off the final three overs to complete a
remarkable day of cricket.

Tendulkar, the opener

On this day, in 1994, a stiff neck to
then Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu
forced the team management to
consider a young Sachin Tendulkar's
request of opening the batting for
India in an ODI against New Zealand at
Eden Park in Auckland. After Indian
seamers Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath and
Salil Ankola blew away the top-order
and restricted the Black Caps to a
paltry 142, Tendulkar flourished in his
new role at the top of the order. He
smashed New Zealand's seamers,
repeatedly hitting them over the in-
field, en-route a bludgeoning 82 off 49
as India chased down the target at a
canter. The Indian think-tank took
stock of Tendulkar's batting abilities at
the top of the order and then moved
him permanently up the order, a role
in which Tendulkar went on to
become, arguably the format's best
batsman, notching up 45 of his 49
hundreds at an astounding average of 48.29.

Triple delight for Sehwag in Multan

On this day in 2004, Virender Sehwag
became the first Indian batsman to
score a Test match triple hundred with
a six off off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq
in the first Test of the series at Multan.
Sehwag tore into a hapless Pakistan
bowling attack, hitting boundaries at
will, and put the hosts out of the
game. During his innnings of 309,
Sehwag was ably supported by an
equally classy innings by Sachin
Tendulkar. When Sehwag nicked one
to the keeper off Mohammad Sami on
the second afternoon, India had
notched up 509 on the board. Sehwag's
achievement on the day was marred
by an unfortunate controversy
involving then captain Rahul Dravid
who declared the Indian innings at
675/5 with Tendulkar unbeaten six
short of a double century. India went
on to complete an innings win in what
was to be the legendary Saqlain
Mushtaq's final international game.
