A Kohli masterclass in Hobart

On this day in 2012, Virat Kohli
enhanced his growing reputation as a
hunter of targets with a sublime 133
off 86 deliveries against Sri Lanka at
the Bellerive Oval in Hobart that
included a brutal onslaught on Lasith
Malinga. India needed to chase 320 in
40 overs to entertain any hopes of
qualifying for the finals of the
Commonwealth Bank tri-series and
were given a brisk start by openers
Sachin Tendulkar and Virender
Sehwag. Kohli walked into bat at the
fall of Tendulkar's wicket at 86 for 2 in
the 10th over. Straightaway, he went
about peppering the short square
boundaries with his sumptuous
strokeplay. Kohli added 115 for the
third wicket with Gautam Gambhir
before going into overdrive in a rapid
120-run unbeaten stand with Suresh
Raina.

India completed the historic
chase in 36.4 hours with the highlight
being Kohli taking 24 in an over off
Lasith Malinga. Unfortunately
however, despite Kohli's brilliance,
other results didn't go favourably for
India and they crashed out of the
tournament.

Sachin 98 floors Pakistan in Centurion

On this day, in a group encounter at
the 2003 World Cup, Sachin Tendulkar
conjured a magical 98 off 75 deliveries
in a high octane clash against Pakistan
to extend India's unbeaten streak
against their neighbours in Cricket's
biggest competition. Riding on Saeed
Anwar's century, Pakistan had posted
273 in their 50 overs, a formidable total
considering their bowling attack that
featured Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis,
Shoaib Akhtar Abdul Razzaq and
Shahid Afridi. Tendulkar, who took
strike in the first over, started by
cutting the legendary Akram for four
in front of point before unleashing his
genius on teh World's fastest bowler -
Shoaib Akhtar. He hit the speedster for
an uppercut six over third-man before
bringing out the touch-play from his
repertoire to send the ball racing to
the fence.

Kevin O'Brien brilliance leaves England stunned

Arguably the best knock of the 2011
World Cup came from Ireland's Kevin
O'Brien against England in Bangalore.
Set a stiff target of 327, few expected
Ireland to give England much of a
fight. In the chase Ireland slipped to
106/4 in the 23rd over. Things looked
to be going in England's favour but no
one was braced for what was to follow.
Kevin O'Brien smashed a quickfire fifty
but things still looked out of reach for
the Irish. However O'Brien believed and
slowly made everyone else around him
believe. England's confidence withered
away amidst the brutal assault and
O'Brien went on to register the fastest
World Cup ton and was unbeaten on
133 off just 63 balls as Ireland went on
to a famous win.

3rd March 2009

Sri Lankan team bus attacked in
Lahore

On this day in 2009, the Sri Lankan
team bus en-route the Gaddafi
stadium, Lahore was attacked by 12
gunmen killing six policemen and two
civilians while also injuring members
of the Sri Lankan team. The cricketers
were on their way to play the third day
of the second Test match of the series
when the armed militants opened fire
on the wheels of the bus. Mehar
Mohammad Khalil, the driver of the
bus kept on driving for a distance of
500 metres until they reached the
stadium. The team was then airlifted
from the Gadaffi Stadium back. Sri
Lankan players Thilan Samaraweera
and Tharanga Paranavitana were
among those who sustained injuries
during the attack. Other cricketing
countries have since boycotted
Pakistan as a venue for international
cricket forcing the PCB to shift base to
the United Arab Emirates.

16th March 2012

The 100th Hundred

On this day in 2012, Sachin Tendulkar completed a jaw-dropping 100th international century when he pushed Shakib Al-Hasan towards square-leg for a single in an India-Bangladesh Asia Cup encounter in Mirpur. The wait for the milestone was excruciatingly
long. Tendulkar completed his 99th century during the 2011 World Cup group stages and then went through tournaments in England, Australia and
at home against West Indies without a
century despite batting reasonably
well. The 100th was an
uncharacteristically subdued innings
but by the end of it, an expression of
relief writ large on Tendulkar's face.
The match turned out to be
bittersweet for Tendulkar himself as
India's total of 289 was overhauled by
Bangladesh, a result that eventually
dumped India out of the competition.
Tendulkar's feat of 100 100s is likely to
withstand the test of time and much
like Don Bradman's average of 99.94,
will probably never be broken.

17th March 1996

Sri Lanka lift the World Cup

Aravinda de Silva was the hero on the
big night, following up his 3/42 and 2
catches with a sterling 107 as Sri
Lanka became the first co-host nation
to clinch the World Cup. After being
invited to bat first, the Sri Lankan
spinners restricted Australia to 241 at
the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Sri
Lanka endured a shaky start, losing
their in-form openers early, but
Aravinda de Silva and Arjuna
Ranatunga steered them to the finish
line with ice-coolness.
From underdogs to top-dog was Sri
Lanka's story of the 1996 World Cup.
Reversal after reversal in the previous
five World Cups, the Islanders surged
to the title, despite being wounded by
off-field issues. Though Gurusinha
retired a few months after lifting the
World Cup, Sri Lanka went from
strength to strength with the likes of
Jayasuriya and Muralitharan
continuing to make waves.
