Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala appear to be heading for a face-off with the Indian cricket board over the franchisee fee issue.
It has been learnt that both the teams have paid 75 per cent of their annual payment to the BCCI as a protest to the reduction of the number of games -- from 18 to 14 -- they are playing, against what was mentioned in the Invitation to Tender (ITT) document.
IPL reduced the number of matches planned initially, from 94 to 74, citing the frenzied international schedule. The ITT had specified a similar structure of games to be played amongst the 10 teams -- nine by each of them.
Apparently, both teams have argued that they bought the teams at a very high-rate, expecting specific revenues from these nine matches to be played.
Sahara had secured the Pune team for Rs 17 billion, while a consortium of businessmen purchased Team Kochi for Rs 15 billion. The franchises are expected to shell out 10 per cent of the total amount each year for a period of 10 years.
