Opera has updated the Opera Mini app for Android that brings the new Smart Page feature. This lets you view your favorite sites, latest updates from social networks (Twitter and Facebook), news gathered from your favorite sites (via their RSS feeds) and suggested links on the home screen. The Smartpage feature was available in the Opera Mini Next and Opera Mini 7 for BlackBerry, Symbian and Java Phones earlier this May.

Seven Indian mobile handset makers will preinstall the Opera Mini mobile web browser.

Celkon, Karbonn, Lava and Intex will preinstall Opera Mini’s browser on all their Android devices.

Opera Mini will also be preinstalled on select Android devices by Fly and Zen, as well as on HCL ME tablets.

Opera Mini uses a server to pre-process and compress websites to 10 percent of their original size before sending them to the mobile device.

“Number of Indians accessing the web from mobile devices is growing at a much faster rate than those using a computer. This unique environment has made it essential for handset manufacturers to ensure their upcoming mobile devices are web enabled and are ready to deliver the best browsing experience,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software.

Tata Docomo, one of the many leading operators in India, has partnered with Opera, the browser company, for providing a customized co-branded Opera Mini browser for all of its users in India. Armed with server side data compression technology, which the company pioneered, it provides up to 90% compression and lets you browse with much lesser impact on your mobile data balance. The co-branded browser is available for download at m.opera.com on all the supported mobile devices. That means everything except Windows Phone, we guess.

The co-branded browser has some links based on Tata Docomo’s landing page for the usual WAP site, and has necessary speed dial shortcuts too. This is in line with previous partnerships by Opera with Idea, Vodafone and Airtel in the previous years. Now, they have added Tata Docomo to the list of operators in India with a co-branded Opera Mini browser.

Interesting to see Opera still pursuing the market, but we guess it still sees potential in the still relevant feature phone market here, but this might apply for smartphone users too, who occasionally get locked in seriously lacking connectivity areas. Anyways, give it a go if you are a Tata Docomo user.
