We need Gigabite fixed FTTH across India at 1999(500Mbps at 999). I don't know how to do that, but it's the need of the hour. I am hundred percent sure, Jio+Airtel+Tata won't do it. It's time for local players to do that stuff.

In small cities like mine, local ISPs are offering just a bit better plans than Airtel and Jio. Some of their plans are pretty much the same. So, I don't think it is possible across India, until Airtel and Jio do it.

Airtel and Jio can't expand each village with fiber as alternative backup will be emerging for them like satellite and 6G in next 5 years. So, local players fiber expansion is critical for home broadband service in villages.

Satellite network won't be disrupting. Nobody will be willing to pay 100000 rupees for month for starlink project. Let's see what will be reaction of Modi and Elon Musk. 5G itself is costlier for everyone. You have to upgrade to 5G handset. Lots of upfront cost. Nobody is willing to pay for it. FTTH will make sense. For that thing, FTTH must expand. From what I came to know, Airtel has reduced their attention and investment from 5G. Airtel will focus on 4G and fiber expansion. Jio has totally stopped fiber expansion.

ACT and some local vendors are offering at 1499-1999-2499 if you take annual plans. For all others, Excitel is best one.

I mean satellite network can be used for data back haul of big telcos Airtel and Jio, not every one.

Unfortunately, they have no plans for optical fiber expansion in the foreseeable future.

Optical fiber deployment costed them way more money than this new airfiber deployment costs considering it's done at tower level only. Furthermore, airfiber has lesser maintenance for Jio O&M (operations & maintenance) team, and optical fiber wire cuts and splicing was a nightmare to them. To get rid of these troubles they have stopped deploying optical fiber. This is what I was told while discussing this million rupees question with a local Jio employee. 😒

Though I totally agree that the internet quality can not be the same on optical fiber vs. airfiber but from what I understand Jio thinks that regular home customers need only some basic browsing experience + entertainment (OTT/TV etc). Their airfiber is able to achieve that. They might not consider to invest for the negligible amount of tech savvy users that are present on these tech forums and elsewhere in our country. Afterall, Jio is a company aiming to make higher profits every year and they will choose anything that costs them less maintenance costs as long as they are able to provide similar fiber kind of service though it. 🥲

Posts moved to relevant thread. You can continue further discussion here.

In the last few months Airtel has been expanding their optical fiber rapidly. I have shared this information in our forum.
