Malinga holds up on much-awaited return

prv_6c85c_1423466526.jpg

To understand the importance of the 27
deliveries bowled by Lasith Malinga at a
blisteringly chilly Hagley Oval on Monday,
it is important to understand where he's
been over the last six months. In
September, Malinga underwent
arthroscopic surgery on a troublesome left
ankle. In December, recurring pain sent
him to Melbourne for another visit with his
orthopaedic surgeon. He arrived in New
Zealand last month with his ankle
strapped. There were concerns over one of
his knees.

Coming into this important match, Angelo
Mathews, his captain, termed Malinga as
the team's X-factor. Kumar Sangakkara
concurred. Mahela Jayawardene reckoned
Malinga's experience gave Sri Lanka "ten
percent more" on the field.

A day before he turned out for Sri Lanka
in their first World Cup warm-up against
South Africa, Malinga himself spoke in
distinctly different tones, saying matter-
of-factly that he felt pain every time his
left foot landed on delivery in the nets.
Would he play on Monday? And if he did,
would Malinga bowl at full pelt or gently
ease himself back? The questions were
obvious but significant.

Kohli transformation from support cast to top role

prv_5c74a_1423465236.jpg

Virat Kohli heard someone hail
him in the hotel lobby on Monday
afternoon and halted. He took his shades
off to exchange pleasantries. The gesture
was not done for effect but the air of
confidence in his eyes sparkled before he
readjusted the dark glares on the bridge of
his nose and stepped out into sunny
Adelaide.

It was almost as if the India vice-captain
wanted this one gesture alone to dispel
the growing lack of confidence in his team
in the run-up to the ICC Cricket World Cup
2015. As India prepare for their big game
against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval on
Sunday, more than anyone else, Kohli will
be aware that his role has changed
drastically from four years ago.

Back in 2011, he started off with a century
on his World Cup debut but in a team
laden with batsmen like Virender Sehwag,
Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir and
Yuvraj Singh, not to speak of Mahendra
Singh Dhoni, he was but part of the
support cast. In the four years, he has
become the bulwark of India's batting,
earning the respect of his peers around
the world.

Though Ajinkya Rahane is in good form,
Kohli's challenge appears to have grown
larger since Suresh Raina, another 2011
World Cup winner, has played only one
knock of note recently a 51 against
Australia in an ODI last month sandwiching
a pair in the Sydney Test and two scores
of 1 each against England.

Sohail Khan injury scare for Pakistan

Pakistan were hit by a fresh World Cup
injury scare on Monday when fast bowler
Sohail Khan was sidelined by a calf
problem during a warm-up game against
Bangladesh. The 30-year-old, a surprise
inclusion in the squad, bowled six overs
and took one wicket before he walked off
the field at Sydney's Blacktown Olympic
Park Oval.

Although the injury is not thought to be
serious, it comes after frontline pacemen
Umar Gul and Junaid Khan were forced out
with knee and thigh problems respectively.
On Sunday, opener Mohammad Hafeez also
withdrew from the 15-man squad with an
ankle injury as fitness problems mount for
the 1992 champions.

"Sohail suffered a cramp in his calf
muscle and as a precaution he did not
bowl after six overs," said a team media
officer. "He can still run without any
problems and we hope he will be fine
soon."

Pakistan's bowling stocks are being
severely tested after Gul was ruled out
before the squad was announced and
Junaid Khan had to withdraw later.

Star spinner Saeed Ajmal's remodelled
action was declared legal on Saturday but
the ruling came too late for his inclusion
in Pakistan's squad. Paceman Rahat Ali
and opener Nasir Jamshed have been
given late call-ups and will join the squad
on Wednesday.

Pakistan will play another warm-up game,
against England, on Wednesday, before
opening their World Cup campaign against
arch-rivals and defending champions India
on Sunday.
