MS Dhoni struggles to identify playing XI before Pakistan clash

image2png.php

As the Indian team suffered
yet another defeat, skipper Mahendra
Singh Dhoni is struggling to identify his
playing XI for the high-voltage World
Cup clash against arch-rivals Pakistan.

India lost their first warm-up game
against top contenders Australia by 106
runs on Sunday and now have one more
game left against Afghanistan on
Tuesday before the main tournament
starts on February 14.

"It has been difficult for us. When the
batsmen click, the bowlers don't and
when the bowlers do, the batsmen
don't. We need to sort that out. What's
important is that we have one more
game in our hand and before playing
Pakistan it would be good to have the
first XI in our hand," Dhoni said at the
post-match presentation ceremony.

However, the Indian captain said there
were "plenty of positives in the game".

Asked what he was looking at for
identifying the final XI, Dhoni said
there were quite a few things to watch.

Indian bowling needs to visit the Dipak Patel laboratory

Does MS Dhoni have an ace up his
sleeve - an ace nobody but that cocktail
waitress can see in her secret mirror? It
seems to be the case.

Same bowlers making same mistakes
match after match. Runs being
conceded, bowlers not reacting, but the
captain staying cool as a cucumber.
Slowly, an impression is taking shape
that Dhoni knows how to fix the issue,
with a secret weapon that he'll unleash
only when the World Cup begins.

On Sunday, Dhoni's "switch-off" theory
didn't work as David Warner and Glenn
Maxwell scored 160 runs in just 35 balls
(25 fours and 10 sixes) to once again
take the steam out of Indian attack,
exposing its frailties out in the open.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar didn't seem ready
for a full-tilt warm-up, being mindful
of not putting extra pressure on his
ankle. As a result, the swing and those
few extra kilometres remained absent
from his bowling.

Mohammed Shami again looked
overworked, without much left in the
tank to travel another mile. That
resulted in freebies in the form of full-
tosses and length deliveries, which
Australia feasted upon in the warm-up
game on Sunday.

Veterans set to play key role in World Cup

image2png.php

The belief that "old is gold" will once
again be put to the test in this World
Cup, with several players bolstering
teams with their experience and guile.

Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene,
Pakistan's Shahid Afridi and New
Zealand's Daniel Vettori are the most
experienced players as each of the trio
will be featuring in their fifth World
Cup.

Jayawardene, 37, retired from Test
cricket last year after a glittering career
and he will hang up his one-day
international kit after the World Cup.

With a 33-match tally in the
tournament, Jayawardene will be the
most experienced player when it comes
to World Cups.

After a miserable first round exit as
defending champions in 1999 the next
three editions were memorable, with Sri
Lanka the losing semi-finalists in 2003
and runners-up in the next two World
Cups.

He led the team from the front with a
scintillating century in the 2007 semi-
final against New Zealand and then
notched another ton in the final of 2011
World Cup, albeit in a losing cause as
hosts India won in Mumbai.

Jayawardene still holds a key position
in Sri Lanka's batting order, along with
Kumar Sangakkara who will be featuring
in his fourth World Cup.

Sangakkara has played 30 World Cup
matches and just like old wine has
embellished his batting, with the left-
hander the highest run-getter in one-
day internationals last year.
