RE: ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 News, Updates and Results

We'll make sure this is a memorable World Cup: Jayawardene

After six weeks in New Zealand, which
included two Test matches and seven
ODIs, the time to scout has passed for Sri
Lanka. They must move quickly past
Dhammika Prasad's injury and hope that
Lasith Malinga - who admitted on Sunday
that each delivery bowled in the nets hurts
- gets match-ready and remains so
throughout the 2015 ICC World Cup.

Driving their optimism about the teams
chances in the tournament were the fabled
pair of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar
Sangakkara - 26,218 ODI runs between
them - who will bow out of 50-over cricket
after the quadrennial event.

In the seven ODIs with New Zealand,
Sangakkara (321) and Tillakaratne Dilshan
(397) topped the run charts but the lack
of support told. The bulk of
Jayawardene's 278 runs came in two
innings (104 in Christchurch and 94 in
Nelson) and no other batsman made 150
runs. While Sangakkara admitted the lack
of runs from the middle order was a factor
in defeat, he felt the team was ready to
improve come February 14.

Misbah unsure about Ajmal's World Cup participation

prv_a8245_1423382861.jpg

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq, on
Sunday, said he was unsure whether
Saeed Ajmal would participate in the ICC
Cricket World Cup 2015 despite the off-
spinner's bowling action getting cleared
after an official retest. The 37-year-old
Ajmal had originally withdrawn from the
World Cup, which begins on Saturday, after
he failed to correct his action in time for
the 15-man squad announcement last
month.

Ajmal was reported during the Galle Test
in Sri Lanka in August last year and was
subsequently suspended by ICC from
bowling at the international level after his
action was assessed a month later.
Ajmal's withdrawal left Pakistan's World
Cup plans in tatters. The team enters the
World Cup after back to back series
losses to New Zealand.

Ajmal was, on Saturday, cleared by the
ICC to play again, sparking talk of a
surprise call-up for the World Cup. "You
never know, there are a lot of ifs and
buts," Misbah told a press conference
when asked of Ajmal's chances of
appearing in the showpiece event. "The
main concern is that he hasn't played any
cricket yet. Let's see how it goes next
week because the team is already
announced and everybody is here so I
can't say anything about that," he added.

India's 'new team' has good chance of retaining World Cup, says Kirsten

kirsten.jpg

India's World Cup-winning
coach Gary Kirsten Saturday
said the team has a "really good
chance" of repeating their 2011
success.

Speaking to mediapersons at a
city hotel here, Kirsten revealed
that the Indians had an
"incredibly strong team which
the opponents would find tough
to beat in the World Cup in
Australia and New Zealand,
beginning Feb 14.

"The Indians have a really good
chance of retaining the trophy.
They have produced a new team
after 2011 and they have had
incredible success. I think the
Champions Trophy win was a
tremendous event for them and
they have an incredibly strong
side, which will be tough to
beat," Kirsten said.

Asked if fielding an injured
player can become a liability
for the team, the 47-year-old
added that it depends on the
circumstances and the balance
of the team.

"Depends on how important the
cricketer is to the balance of the
team. Replacing an important
but injured player is tough, as
the guy who comes in to fill his
shoes may not be able to play
the same role.

Before the knock-outs the teams
can experiment and reshuffle a
bit and then settle down on the
combination of the team, he
added."

Kirsten said the Indian team
has already forgotten about the
triumph in 2011 and their main
focus would be the upcoming
tournament and how to win the
coveted trophy again.

"They have all forgotten about
2011 and are focusing on the
upcoming World Cup. New time,
renewed hopes, they will be
doing their best to retain the
trophy."

Kirsten was the Indian cricket
team's coach from 2008 to
2011.

New Zealand primed for World Cup: Michael Vaughan

prv_b7f40_1423433163.jpg

Michael Vaughan, the former England
captain, has counted the contenders for
the 2015 ICC World Cup on one hand:
South Africa and co-hosts Australia and
New Zealand. According to Vaughan, this
year was New Zealand's best shot at
winning the coveted ODI trophy because
of their strong form over the past 12
months.

"New Zealand's recent form and record is
ominous. In the past they have been
everyone's favourite 'dark horses', but not
this time. They are genuine contenders,"
Vaughan wrote in his column for The
Telegraph. "In the past they exceeded
expectation. This time they are expected
to deliver and it will be interesting to see
how they cope with that.

"They have always had smart cricketers
able to make the most of their ability.
Now they have the talent as well but have
retained their usual streetwise, cricket
savviness. For guys like Ross Taylor,
Brendon McCullum, Daniel Vettori and Kyle
Mills it is probably their last World Cup
playing at the peak of their powers."
