You're confused. KL and Gill are not competing for the same spot. KL now bats at number 5 in ODIs. His days as opener are long gone. There's no question of dropping Gill unless he performs very badly in Asia Cup and Australia series. Backup opener in the squad is Ishan Kishan

So if Gill fails then Ishan comes. What's the need of Rahul?

1) Left Handed batsman in middle order

Shardul Thakur can provide batting depth ahead of Siraj who is just pure bowler

Thakur is known to break Pships as always he is must bowler in middle overs.

2) Shardul is good for batting but not a good option for bowling as he depends on swing . Since the world cup will be played in October — November , dew factor will be high making him a liability for the bowling combination.

3) I feel Ishaan and Rohit should open the innings, Dhawan is again a slow player who is not in a good form ( if you look at last year's England series ) . We need 80/90 runs in the first 10 overs to put a good total on the board so we need Ishan / Yashasvi / Shubman Gill in the openers role.

4) Shubman Gill can also be a good choice at No 5 I think. Yes he has not performed well outside Motera Stadium but b4 WC , he will play a couple of games which I think will be chance for him to get his confidence again and do well .

Ishan/Yashasvi is not good option if you need 90 runs in first ten overs. Rohit-Dhawan or Rohit-Rahul are the only options we have. Ishan is weak in technique and Yashasvi is too early too judge in ODI format. I will pick Ruturaj over the mentioned played any day any time.

So how you want Iyer in the team who played last in BGT? Also, Rahul's performance is not so good. We want solid middle order players. Surya/Tilak are good options. I will pick Samson over Rahul any day.

Shardul has picked up wickets always whenever he got ball. He is must in XI. Siraj can come in if Shami/Bumrah needs rest.
