Reliance Jio leads in November with 20.8 Mbps download speed among TSPs: TRAI

India’s leading telecom service provider Reliance Jio retained its leadership in terms of download speed in the month of November with 20.8 Mbps download far ahead of its rival telecom service operators while according to the latest data released by the telecom watchdog on 10th December.

Reliance Jio led the pack with download speeds hitting a 6 month high at 20.8 Mbps, up from 17.8 Mbps in the preceding month of October while Vodafone also hit a 6 month high at 9.8 Mbps, up from 8.8 Mbps in the preceding month of October.

Airtel too hit a six month high seeing its download speed hit the 8 Mbps mark for the first in the second half of the year, up from 7.5 Mbps in the preceding month of October. Idea’s download speed however took a hit coming down from 9.1 Mbps in the preceding month of October to 8.8 Mbps in November.

On the upload speed front, Vodafone continued its lead with 6.5 Mbps upload speed in November maintaining its upload speed for the third consecutive month while Reliance Jio hit 6 month high at 3.7 Mbps upload speed, up from 3.5 Mbps upload speed in the preceding quarter of October.

Idea’s upload speed came down from 5.9 Mbps in the preceding month of October to 5.8 Mbps in November while Airtel hit a six month high at 4.0 Mbps upload speed, up from 3.8 Mbps in the preceding month of October.

Operators Upload Data Speeds (in Mbps)

TRAI continues to measure the upload and download speeds of Idea and Vodafone separately even though both of them merged since their networks are yet to be completely integrated. TRAI’s data has been computed on the basis of data samples collected from various consumers of the TSPs on a crowd sourcing basis during speed test initiated by them and background speed tests initiated by MySpeed app over the last month.

How is this test conducted? Doesn't the output differ bases on signal strength?

They take the average of the readings from different test locations at different times of the day. But TRAI test results show that highest possible speeds in an ideal setup while OpenSignal results show the true speed that the operator's subscribers get in the real life set up.
