Google is shutting down its Play Movies & TV app for Android TV devices next month. Starting October 5, 2023, users will no longer be able to access the Google Play Movies & TV app on their Android TV devices.
However, users can access the purchased or rented movies and TV shows through the Shop tab on Android TV, Google TV on Android and iOS devices, and YouTube. Furthermore, users can continue to purchase or rent movies and TV shows through the Shop tab on their Android TV devices.
According to a report by 9to5 Google, the company is sending emails to Android TV users to inform the same.
The email reads, “Google Play Movies & TV app will no longer be available on your Android TV device from 05 October 2023. You can continue to buy or rent movies directly through the Shop tab on your Android TV. You can find your existing purchases, including active rentals, on the Shop tab on Android TV, Google TV Android, and iOS mobile apps, and YouTube. Please visit Google TV Help Center or YouTube Help Center if you need help accessing your previous purchases.”
Google already replaced its Play Movies & TV app with Google TV on Android and iOS devices. Currently, the Google Play Movies & TV app is only available on Android TV, and the company is shutting down the app in favor of the new Shop tab for a consistent user experience. Users can access the Shop tab through the home screen, and they will be able to access their existing library from Play Movies, Google TV, and YouTube.
