The Television Academy has announced the nominations for the concluded television season recognizing the robust group of talents and slew of new television shows. A virtual ceremony was held earlier today that was hosted by father-daughter duo Ron Cephas Jones from Los Angeles and Jasmine Cephas Jones who both had won their Emmys last year creating history as the first father-daughter duo to have won the Emmys in the same year.
HBO and HBO Max lead the number of nominations with 130 nods followed by Netflix and Disney+ with 129 and 71 nominations each. In the Indian context, Disney+ Hotstar leads as the home for the most nominated shows with the content from HBO, FX, and Disney+. Disney Plus’s sophomore original series The Mandalorian leads the charts along with Netflix’s The Crown with 24 nominations each followed by Marvel’s debut limited series WandaVision with 23 nods.
In the Outstanding drama series category, Disney Plus’s Star Wars drama The Mandalorian received a nod second time in a row while Prime Video’s satirical superhero drama The Boys nominated for the first time along with new entrants like Bridgerton and Lovecraft Country. The veterans Pose, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale and This is Us.
In the outstanding comedy category, barring the returning shows like The Kominsky Method and black-ish other six shows are nominated for the first time in the category. In the outstanding limited series category, Marvel Studios’ first show WandaVision was nominated along with HBO’s acclaimed whodunit series Mare of Easttown. The Queen’s Gambit, I May Destroy You, and The Underground Railroad rounds up the rest of the nominees. The important categories are mentioned below. This year’s ceremony unlike last year’s will be an in-person event and is scheduled on Sunday, Sept. 19 (i.e., Sept. 20 in India) at the Microsoft Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, and hosted by The Neighborhood‘s Cedric the Entertainer. However, there is no official word yet on the Indian broadcaster, the event was blacked out last year as well in India.
