Soon after Google started rolling out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for its compatible Nexus smartphones, manufacturers have started announcing software upgrade roadmap for their smartphones. Looks like Xiaomi doesn’t want to stay behind in the race. While the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is yet to officially announce its Android 7.0 Nougat upgrade plans, the company may have already started working on it. An alleged screenshot of MIUI 9 has now popped up on Weibo , and it is expected to be based on Android 7.0 Nougat.

While the screenshot doesn’t reveal much in terms of features, it does offer the version number – 6.9.23. A post on MIUI forums also offers a list of devices that will be updated to MIUI 9. This includes devices such as the highly popular Redmi Note 3, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi 3, Redmi 3S, Redmi 3A, Mi 4s, Mi 4c and Mi 4i. The list also includes this year’s Mi 5 flagship smartphone as well as devices like the Mi Max, Mi Note and Mi Pad 2. While the recently launched Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus aren’t mentioned, it’s just a preliminary, unofficial list and more devices are likely to be added soon when Xiaomi officially announces MIUI 9. Talking about release date, rumors point that the beta ROM could be available around December-January.

Android 7.0 Nougat brings a host of performance improvements and new features over Android Marshmallow. It brings multi-window feature that allows you to run two apps side-by-side. There is a new inline notification feature that allows you to reply to text messages, and instant messages right from the notification panel. It works on apps such as Telegram messenger, Hike Messenger and WhatsApp among others.

While we all love faster processors and more RAM, but all that processing power takes a toll on the phone’s battery life. There are apps that run in the background and consume some amount of energy. To tackle this, Google had introduced Doze feature in Android 6.0 Marshmallow. With Android 7.0 Nougat, Google has further optimized the feature that puts background apps in hibernation mode when you leave your smartphone untouched for a long time. The improved doze mode works right from the moment your smartphone screen is turned off. There is also ‘project svelte’ that aims to optimize RAM usage and minimize the memory used by the system and apps.

Android Nougat also comes with improved data saver, where you can block background data access to apps to reduce data consumption. Users also get an option to whitelist specific apps to access internet, even on metered connections. Other features include Always-On VPN and call screening which ensures that rejected calls don’t show up in notification logs. Lastly, there is also number blocking feature that allows users to block unwanted callers.

With MIUI 8, Xiaomi offers all the goodies of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow along with some nifty features such as new photo and video editing tools in the gallery app, live currency conversion in the calculator app, integrated caller and SMS ID, T9 dialer with Hindi search and scrolling screenshot. Xiaomi also added the ability to run dual apps which allows you to have two different Hike Messenger and WhatsApp accounts on the same smartphone. Lastly, there is also a feature called dual-space where users can have two different accounts with two different passwords. One account can be for private use with all content safe and secured, whereas other can be used for general use.

Xiaomi has also added floating quick ball tool, to make it easier for single-handed use. However, it remains to be seen as to what extra features Xiaomi adds in the MIUI 9.

Hope at the same time OxygenOS 4 will also come out in community version with Android N 7.0

Till now, MIUI is on Lollipop only. First we should get the Marshmallow update asap.

Same miui 8 is based on different Android versions from android Kitkat to Marshmallow depending on the phones. For example Redmi 2 has miui 8 on Kitkat, Redmi 2 Prime has miui 8 on Lollipop and Redmi 3s has Miui 8 on Marshmallow. So latest miui 8 lollipop only, isn't true.

Fortunately most of the Miui 8 features are same on all these phones with security updates.

Right, There's a Redmi 3s prime at our home which is on Marshmallow. I was talking about the Redmi Note 3 that I'm using.
