India seals series with an innings win

Whispers about March 2001 briefly did the rounds. The key characters of that epochal day — V.V.S. Laxman and Rahul Dravid — were again present at the Eden Gardens but this time as alert fielders and not as men wielding miracle-bats. And as the West Indies middle-order displayed resilience, Laxman and Dravid's decade-old ambush of the Australians was dredged back and the host broadcaster beamed that scorecard.

In the end they were all red herrings as the West Indies' revival never materialised and India won by an innings and 15 runs with a day to spare in the second Test that concluded here on Thursday. Darren Bravo (136), Marlon Samuels (84) and skipper Darren Sammy's (32) efforts were all lost in the massive shadow of India's 478-run first innings lead and the West Indies' second innings halted at 463.

Scoreboard

Yuvraj dropped, Rohit in the mix

Middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh has been dropped for the third and final Test against the West Indies after failing to score a half-century in three innings in the first two Tests. Rohit Sharma, who has made two back-to-back hundreds for Mumbai in the first two rounds of the Ranji Trophy, has been named in the squad.

Yuvraj regained his place in the Test squad following his Man of the Tournament award during India’s World Cup-winning campaign. His comeback was derailed when he fractured his index finger after being struck by a bouncer from Tim Bresnan during the second Test at Trent Bridge before being included for the first Test against the West Indies after recovering. However, the selectors have been left disappointed after scores of 23, 18 and 25. What added to the lack of faith was the manner in which he struggled to play the short ball on the docile wicket in Kolkata. The axing means the No.6 slot in the Test batting line-up is up for grabs again.

Let cricket decide its own course, says Tendulkar

Tuesday's home Test in Mumbai against West Indies provides him an opportunity to reach 100 international centuries in fairy tale fashion. But Sachin Tendulkar says...

A fairy tale situation awaits Sachin Tendulkar: Completing his 100th international century in Tuesday's Test against the West Indies on his home turf -- the Wankhede Stadium. There is enough reason to believe that the next Test being held in Mumbai will add more pressure on Tendulkar to achieve the milestone, imminent since the World Cup earlier this year. But the master batsman did not show any trace of anxiety when he spoke to MiD DAY here in Kolkata where India beat West Indies in the second Test inside four days.

"I am not thinking about that. I feel it (100 hundreds) is just a number. I am thinking about playing good cricket. I am enjoying my game," said Tendulkar, who missed out on the milestone by 26 runs in the second innings of the opening Test in Delhi. In Kolkata, he was dismissed for 38 in India's only innings.

Ind vs WI: West Indies opt to bat against India in 3rd Test

NEW DELHI: West Indies captain Darren Sammy won the toss and chose to bat against India in third Test at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday.

For India, Virat Kohli has been chosen over Rohit Sharma to replace Yuvraj Singh and Varun Aaron makes his Test debut in place of Umesh Yadav who has been rested.

For the West Indies, Shivnarine Chanderpaul is out due to injury and replaced by Kieran Powell. And a fit-again Ravi Rampaul replaces Kemar Roach who is down with gastroenteritis.

If the West Indies want to clinch the final inconsequential Test and give themselves a big morale boost ahead of the five-match one-day rubber that follows, they need to get their act together in all departments of the game.

A glimpse of what the visiting team's batsmen are capable of if they apply themselves and play with determination was there to be seen in the second innings of the second Test in Kolkata when they nearly saved the innings defeat after yet another poor batting display in the first innings.

Teams:

India: MS Dhoni (Capt.), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Varun Aaron.

West Indies: Darren Sammy (Capt.), Adrian Barath, Kragg Brathwaite, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Kieran Powell, Marlon Samuels, Carlton Baugh, Fidel Edwards, Devendra Bishoo, Ravi Rampaul.
