Pollard century nearly cancels out Tiwary's effort as India beat West Indies by 34 runs

CHENNAI: If the Chennai crowd was missing Virender Sehwag (rested) at the beginning of the match, they had forgotten all about it by the end of the day.

They had found a new hero in Manoj Tiwary, but one Kieron Pollard made up for the absence of Viru.

His stunning effort (119 off 110 balls) couldn't take his side home, but no one would have complained if he had ended up on the winning side on Sunday.

After the West Indians were reduced to 36-4 in no time with Irfan Pathan striking twice in his first two overs, Pollard came up with one of the best knocks ever played at the Chepauk.

The pitch was keeping low all the time and it was impossible to play big shots. But it didn't matter for Pollard. He brought his powerful wrists into play and hit sixes at will even as he kept running out of partners. Andre Russell (53 off 37 balls) was looking particularly dangerous, but even his dismissal couldn't deter Pollard.

After the eighth wicket went down, Pollard started refusing singles, held one end up and kept looking for the big shots. And the Indian attack, sans their No. 1 spinner R Ashwin, just didn't know how to keep the big man in check. Anything in his zone kept vanishing in the stands and when Virat Kohli dropped a sitter at long-on, the ball trickled over the ropes and Pollard celebrated his maiden ODI century in style.
