India's wondrous Test season - In numbers

A look back at the defining numbers from the season:

10 wins in 13 Tests this season for India marks the second-most successful season for a team in terms of number of wins. Australia hold the record with their 11 wins in 12 matches in 2005/06 season. Australia also won all the ten Tests they played in 1999/00 season.

Season summary:

Against Tests Won Draw Lost Player of the Series

NZ 3 3 0 0 R Ashwin
Eng 5 4 1 0 Virat Kohli
Ban 1 1 0 0 Virat Kohli
Aus 4 2 1 1 Ravindra Jadeja

4 India's series win over Australia meant they hold the rubber against all nine oppositions simultaneously. It is only the fourth such instance in the history of Test cricket. Australia from October 2004 to September 2005 and December 2006 to October 2008 and South Africa from Dec 2012 to Mar 2014 have been the only other .

1 Previous instance of a team losing consecutive Tests after scoring over 400 in the first innings - Australia against India in India in 2010. England faced this ignominy this season following their innings defeats in Mumbai and Chennai. England's 477 in Chennai is the highest total for any team ever to lose by an innings margin.

4 Totals in excess of 600 for India this season - the most for any team in a season. They became the first team in history to post over 600 in three consecutive innings - 631 in Mumbai (v England), 759/7 in Chennai (v England) and 687/6 dec in Hyderabad (v Bangladesh).

6 New Test venues added to the list this season - Indore, Rajkot, Vizag, Pune, Ranchi and Dharamsala. Cheteshwar Pujara scored hundreds in four of these venues (missing out only in Pune and Dharamsala) - making him the only player to do so in the inaugural Test of four different venues.

0 Instance of Indian players missing 50-plus Test matches between two appearances at the start of the season. Parthiv Patel (83 Tests) and Abhinav Mukund (56) made comebacks this season after long gaps. While Parthiv scored an unbeaten fifty in his comeback game, Mukund was dismissed for a duck in the first innings of the Bengaluru Test against Australia.

212 The aggregate of 212 runs in the Pune Test against Australia was India's lowest ever in a home Test where they lost all 20 wickets. India's first innings score of 105 is their lowest ever to contain an individual fifty (KL Rahul scored 64).

15 Batsmen dismissed LBW in the match against New Zealand in Kolkata - the most ever in a Test in India. 33 leg before dismissals in the rubber is also the most in a series in India (max five Tests).

1316 Runs scored by Cheteshwar Pujara in 13 Tests this home season - the second-most ever for any player. His tally is only behind Ricky Ponting's 1483 in the 2005/06 season. Skipper Virat Kohli's 1252 runs is the sixth in the list.

2064 runs aggregated by Pujara in the first-class season 2016/17. He went past a 52-year old record of Chandu Borde, who scored 1604 runs in the 1964/65 season. Pujara scored seven hundreds in all, four coming in the Test season.

Pujara in 2016-17 season:

Tests 13 23 1316 62.66 4 8 202
Total 17 29 2064 82.56 7 10 226*

3 Double hundreds for Kohli this home season - the joint-most for any player in a single season along with Don Bradman (1930) and Rahul Dravid (2003/04). Kohli scored one in the series in West Indies before the start of the home season making him the first player to score double hundreds in four consecutive series. His 235 in Mumbai is the highest score for an Indian captain in Tests.

82 Wickets taken by R Ashwin in 13 Tests this home season - the most by any bowler in a season, eclipsing Dale Steyn's 78 in 2007/08. Ashwin's season comprised of two distinct halves. In the first seven Tests, he took 54 scalps at 20.74 with six five-fers and a wicket every 43 balls. However, in the last six he accounted for 28 victims at 34.03 with a solitary fifer.

Ashwin's 2016-17 season:

3 Ravindra Jadeja became the third player to score 500 runs and take fifty wickets in a season after Kapil Dev (1979/80) and Mitchell Johnson (2008/09). Jadeja's tally of 71 wickets in the season is only behind Ashwin and Styen.

Jadeja's all-round success:

30 Wickets taken by Umesh Yadav in 12 Tests, the fourth-most for an Indian pacer in a home season and the most for any without a five wicket haul. Umesh bowled 355.5 overs in this span, which is also the third-most for an Indian pacer in a home season.

8 for 50 by Nathan Lyon in the Bengaluru Test is the best figures ever for a visiting bowler in India. His spin-twin Steve O'Keefe's match figures of 12 for 70 in the Pune Test was the second-best match figures against India in India.

6 Hundred partnerships between Murali Vijay and Pujara in 10 innings between the two. Only the pair of Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting (seven in 2005/06) had more hundred-plus stands in a season.
