I had promised this to my fans: Virender Sehwag

INDORE: Sunil Gavaskar's mantra was, "Give the first hour to the bowlers, the next five are yours." But Virender Sehwag has his own method. He is just an antithesis to the copybook style of cricket, the waiting game is not for him.

He likes to dominate from the start, in all forms of the game. And he has found outstanding success with his method - two triple centuries in Test matches, the only Indian to achieve that, and now a double century in ODIs too boot, not only emulating Sachin Tendulkar but also surpassing him. What more can you ask from a batsman?

Talking about his historic innings on Thursday, Sehwag said that he was patient to begin with although he still raced to his half-century in just 41 balls which already had four sixes and three fours. That for him was a patient start! His second fifth took only 28 balls (100 in 69 balls), the third fifty in 43 balls and the fourth in only 28 balls, with 200 coming in just 140 balls.

Such was his ferocious hitting that the ball disappeared into the stands every time he decided to lift it. He played strokes all around the park and there was hardly any green grass visible in his wagon-wheel.

It was a fare no cricket-lover who saw it at the ground or on the telly is likely to forget in a hurry. The fans must now be wondering if he will strike a second ODI double ton, aping his two triple hundreds in Test cricket.

Virender Sehwag says he is happy to break Tendulkar's record

INDORE: Dashing Indian opener Virender Sehwag, who on Thursday created history by scoring the highest ever one-day score of 219 in the fourth ODI against West Indies, said that he was happy to have broken the record of batting great and team-mate Sachin Tendulkar.

"I was happy when Tendulkar scored 200 not out. I was sitting in the front and clapping and cheering when he did that. I am extremely happy to emulate Tendulkar and to have broken a record held by a great cricketer like him," Sehwag said after India crushed West Indies by 153 runs to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match ODI series.

Sehwag was on Thursday handed a cheque of Rs 10 lakh by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association for his phenomenal feat and he said in a lighter vein that he would not mind to come again and score another double hundred here.

"I won't mind coming back here again, score a double hundred and take another Rs 10 lakh," he joked.

Flat track but Sehwag played exceptionally well: Richardson

RD2TJ.jpg

Former West Indies captain and team manager Richie Richardson feels playing on flat track helped Virender Sehwag but it doesn't take away anything from the Indian's 'exceptional knock' of a record 219 in the fourth one-dayer here.

“Sehwag played exceptionally well. It was a flat wicket. Even though Sehwag batted so well, I thought if one or two of our batsmen could stick in, we could get to that total. But it was not to be,” Richardson told the mediapersons after the match last night.

“We knew they were going to put on a big total. The outfield was lush green. It was always going to be a high-scoring match. But we were very disappointed as the Indians batted much better on that wicket. Our captain was very positive and said if they could get it, we could too,” said the team manager.

Richardson, however, refused to be drawn into the comparison of Sehwag's innings with Vivian Richards' magnificent 189 against England at Old Trafford back in 1984. Richards' innings was the then highest score in ODIs.

Sehwag just took the game away: Sammy

West Indies captain Darren Sammy said there was little his team could do to stop Sehwag's onslaught.

"Sehwag just took the game away from us. He has destroyed bowlers all over the world, not only us," said Sammy. "We bowled some good balls but he played better shots.

"The pitch was a belter but we got pegged back by their spinners. They kept taking wickets and made in hard for us. It is good that in the end we managed to get past 250."

Virender Sehwag was singing Kishore's song during his 219: Raina

CHENNAI: Swashbuckling India opener Virender Sehwag was singing songs of Kishore Kumar during the course of his record 149-ball 219-run knock against the West Indies in the fourth ODI in Indore, his team-mate Suresh Raina said.

"He was playing very well with no tension. That day, he was singing some Kishore Kumar songs. He was not feeling any kind of tension," Raina, who cracked 55 in a 140 run-stand for the third wicket with Sehwag, said while addressing the 'India Today Youth Summit'.

Asked whether he too joined him in singing, Raina said "No, I was only on 30 at that time. So, I did not."

Sehwag's 219 had 25 boundaries and seven sixes as he smashed the West Indian bowlers all over the park to help India post a mammoth 418 for five in 50 overs.

In the process, Sehwag overtook Sachin Tendulkar's 200 not out made against South Africa.

Apart Raina, off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and BCCI's selection committee chairman Kris Srikkanth was also present at the Youth Summit.
