Windies negate Rohit's effort, keep series alive

MAwia.jpg

AHMEDABAD: Like the first two matches, it was once again left to Rohit Sharma to do the face-saving act. But unlike in the first two games, there was no Virat Kohli or Ravindra Jadeja to give him company this time and bail India out.

Fighting in the company of tailenders, Rohit did his best to take India to what would have been a series-sealing win. But that was not to be as West Indies bowled India out for 244 in 46.4 overs to win by 16 runs and keep the series alive.

Some casual shotmaking, some close calls and some brilliant bowling and fielding by the West Indians left the home team gasping for breath at 105/6 in the 21st over as they chased 261 for victory. But Sharma yet again mounted an innings of lazy brilliance. He almost took India there, but was run out at 95 and with that, hopes were more or less dashed.

Till Sharma was at the crease R Ashwin, Vinay Kumar and Abhimanyu Mithun all showed they could bat a bit. Especially Ashwin, who put on 91 runs for the seventh wicket with Sharma and India looked well on course for another come-from-behind victory.

NEW DELHI: All-rounder Irfan Pathan has been called up to India's 15-man squad for the remaining two one-day games against West Indies so Umesh Yadav can acclimatise in Australia for an upcoming Test series.

The Indian cricket board made the announcement in a statement after West Indies won by 16 runs on Monday to trail 2-1 in the five-match series.

Pathan last represented India during the Twenty20 World Cup in England in June 2009.

An extremely special feeling: Irfan Pathan

jIYGy.jpg

Irfan Pathan has often flitted between the paths of delight and despair. A man, who was once labelled as the probable successor to Kapil Dev and also evoked praise from Wasim Akram, almost became a tale of ‘what-would-have-been' after a loss of form and constant injuries derailed his career. To Irfan's credit, he never gave up.

During his constant trips to the National Cricket Academy here for his injury-rehabilitation stints, the left-arm seamer would say: “It is all coming back.” He would then grin and play a round of table tennis close to the indoor nets.

The belief has stood him in good stead and when the selectors pencilled in his name for the last two ODIs against the West Indies, Irfan was with his family at Vadodara.

He savoured the moment. A comeback dream nurtured ever since he last played for India in an ODI against Sri Lanka at Colombo on February 8, 2009, was being realised. In that game, Irfan scalped Sanath Jayasuriya and then lapsed into the wilderness as his action went awry, confidence remained elusive and his back failed to cope with the strain.

Time still remained an ally as Irfan had age (27) on his side and now after a productive run in the Ranji Trophy with yields of three for 23, five for 54, one for 15, five for 37, seven for 114 and none for 14, the buzz around him got louder.

Providence also played a part as a rib injury ruled out Praveen Kumar while Umesh Yadav is leaving early for Australia.

Juggling with innumerable phone calls while boarding the flight to Indore, which will host the fourth ODI on Thursday, an elated Irfan said: “It feels extremely special to be selected for the last two ODIs against the West Indies.

Kohli warned for showing dissent

Young India batsman Virat Kohli has been reprimanded for showing dissent at an umpire's decision, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said yesterday.

Kohli, 23, stood his ground for "a considerable time" after being given out leg-before during the third ODI against the West Indies in Ahmedabad on Monday.

"Accepting umpires' decisions is part and parcel of playing cricket and on this occasion Virat clearly showed dissent when he had been given out," match referee David Boon said in an ICC statement.

Kohli pleaded guilty to a Level 1 offence of the ICC's Code of Conduct and accepted the proposed sanction from Boon, the statement added.

Ind vs WI: India hope to seal series in Indore

RftwH.jpg

INDORE: Australia can wait. India have an unfinished business before they launch their eagerly awaited tour Down Under. The West Indies are proving too sticky for the Indians and they need to be on the guard, lest the visitors run away with the series.

Stand-in captain Virender Sehwag knows well that his team needs to deliver the knockout punch in the fourth one-day international at the Holkar Stadium on Thursday, rather than leave the fate of the five-match series to the final game in Chennai.

"It's time the top-order fired. It's important for the openers to give a good start, not only in the context of this match but also for the greater challenges we would be facing in Australia.

"The middle-order has done well, but now both Gauti and I need to put runs on the board," he said, before adding, "We would like to settle the series here itself and for that we need to put our hands up, especially me. It's just a matter of getting back into rhythm, as I am timing the ball well."

Injured Bravo out but Windies are not fretting

OSsdv.jpg

In-form West Indies batsman Darren Bravo has been ruled out of Thursday's penultimate one-day international against India with a hamstring problem, the team's captain Darren Sammy said.

Stylish left-hander Bravo retired hurt when on 26 during the third ODI in Ahmedabad on Monday, which the tourists won to stay afloat in the series 2-1.

“Darren Bravo is out for the next game,” said Sammy. “Like we showed when Shiv (Shivnarine Chanderpaul) missed a test (in Mumbai), young (Kieran) Powell came in and took responsibility.”

Powell, who replaced Chanderpaul in the team, made the most of his opportunity

and hit a solid 81 in the first innings of the final test in Mumbai, which ended in a thrilling draw with both sides on level scores.

“Yes, we will miss Bravo in the line-up. But it gives an opportunity for someone else to come out and make a name for himself,” Sammy said. “Our team is definitely improving, when we miss guys, the guys come in and perform.”
