Birth of Colin Cowdrey

..

Michael Colin Cowdrey was born in
Bangalore, India on this day in 1932.
One of the all-time greats, Cowdrey
was the first cricketer to play in a 100
Test matches. He celebrated the
occasion by scoring a fine century
against the visiting Australians at
Edgbaston. Cowdrey, or Lord Cowdrey
was also the first English cricketer to
be given a peerage. He captained
England in 27 Tests, not one of them
included an Ashes game Down Under.
He aggregated a staggering 42,719
First-class runs that included 107
centuries and 231 fifties. Alastair Cook
and Kevin Pietersen are the only two
English batsman to have scored more
Test hundreds than Lord Cowdrey did
(22). Despite all his achievements,
there was always a sense of lost
opportunities with Cowdrey. As Fred
Trueman succinctly put, he was 'a
terrific talent who never fulfilled his potential'

Alastair Cook is born
..

On this day in 1984, Alastair Cook,
future England Test captain was born.
Alastair Cook made his Test debut in
Nagpur, India and straight away hit the
ground running. He scored 60 and 104*
on debut, negotiating Test match
stalwarts Anil Kumble and Harbhajan
Singh with an assured technique and
truck loads of patience.
Cook went from strength to strength
thereafter and six years later became
England's highest century maker in
Test history when he scored his 23rd
Test century against India at the Eden
Gardens.
In between, in 2011-12, he scored a
sensational 766 runs in seven innings
to give England their first series win in
Australia after 24 years. After Andrew
Strauss retired in 2012, Cook took over
England captaincy and instantly won a
Test series in India ..

Murali gets called for chucking
..

On Boxing day in 1995, in the 2nd
Australia-Sri Lanka Test of the series,
umpire, Darrell Hair, no-balled Sri
Lankan off-spinner Muttiah
Muralitharan seven times, for
chucking. This forced a frustrated
Muralitharan to change and bowl from
umpire Steve Dunne's end. Steve
Dunne didn't no-ball him, but that
didn't make any difference to the
outcome of the Test match, as David
Boon and Steve Waugh scored
centuries and Glenn McGrath took
five-wickets in the first innings to
setup a 10-wicket win for the Aussies.
Murali was then called for chucking by
Roy-Emerson in an ODI series in 1999,
months after his action was tested and
the bend accredited to a congenital
deformity. Not many at the MCG, on
December 26, 1995, would have
envisioned Murali going on to take a
world record 800 Test wickets!

'Hair transplant with bald patches'
..

On this day in 2009, the Sri Lanka-India
ODI game at the Feroz Shah Kotla in
Delhi, was abandoned after 23.3 overs
due to 'extremely variable bounce'.
Sunil Gavaskar, doing the pitch report,
had described the pitch as a 'hair
transplant with bald patches'. But
what followed after India put Sri Lanka
in, was not envisioned. Zaheer Khan
removed Upul Taranga off the first ball
and after that, there were painful
blows to the elbow, shoulder and
fingers for the Sri Lankan batsman due
to the ball bouncing up unexpectedly.
Finally, when a Sudeep Tyagi length
delivery reared over keeper MS Dhoni's
reach, Sri Lankan captain, Kumar
Sangakkara, instructed his batsmen to
return. After discussions with the on-
field umpires, match referee, Alan
Hurst decided to abandon the game.
The game's abandonment, however India already won the ODI Series ..

Gavaskar breaks Bradman's record
..

Sunil Gavaskar, India's legendary
batsman, notched up his 30th ton in
his twinkling Test career against the
pillaging West Indies on December 28,
1983. To make it even better, he broke
the record of Don Bradman for most
hundreds in the history Test cricket.
Bradman had accrued 29 hundreds in
just 52 Tests.
Interestingly, Gavaskar came into bat
at No.4 in this game. However, even
then, he had to face the new ball, as
the foursome fearsome of Michael
Holding, Andy Roberts, Malcolm
Marshall and Winston Davis had
reduced India to 0/2. Gavaskar,
eventually amassed 236 not out. At
that time, it was also the highest
individual score by an Indian in Test cricket.

England retain Ashes
..

After going through the pain and
agony of losing one game after
another for 24 long years against
Australia in their own backyard,
England thrashed the home team by a
facile margin of an innings and 157
runs at the MCG to retain The Ashes.
They eventually won the series 3-1 by
winning the last Test in Sydney.
James Anderson and Chris Tremlett
bowled exceptionally well on Day 1 by
consistently hitting good lengths to
take eight wickets between them to
bowl out Australia for just 98. Once
Australia were bowled out for a
meagre score, it became crystal clear
that the visitors would emerge
victorious and retain The Ashes.

Corey Anderson scores fastest ODI ton
..

On this day in 2014, Corey Anderson
broke Shahid Afridi's long-held record
for the fastest century in ODI cricket
when he smashed an unbeaten 131 off
47 balls against West Indies in
Queenstown. Anderson took 36 balls
to reach his century, thus breaking
Shahid Afridi's record set in 1996 by
one ball. Playing in only his seventh
ODI, in a match that was reduced to 21
overs-a-side after rain, Anderson hit
six fours and 14 sixes as New Zealand
notched up a gargantuan 283 in their
21 overs. Jesse Ryder also scored 104
off 51 balls as New Zealand defeated
West Indies by 159 runs. His sterling
effort elso earned him praise even
from the former record holder. "I must
say it's a great achievement and
Anderson deserves all the praise. It
needs a super effort to score a
hundred off 36 balls," Afridi said.

Shane Warne's inauspicious Test debut
..

On this day in 1992, legendary leg-
spinner, Shane Warne, made an
inauspicious start to his Test career
when he played his 1st Test against
India in Sydney. He was thwacked all
over the park by Indian batsmen,
especially, Ravi Shastri in that game.
Sachin Tendulkar too joined in the fun
by essaying a fluent 148.
Eventually, Warne ended up with
figures of 1 for 150 and Shastri
notched up a double ton.

3rd January 1985 ..

Azhar arrives in style
..

On this day in 1985, a stylish Indian
stroke-maker announced his arrival in
Test cricket with a classy 110 on debut.
Mohammad Azharuddin's love-affair
with the Eden Gardens in Kolkata
started right from his first Test in the
1984/85 season. Coming into the third
Test after India and England had split
the first two in Mumbai and Delhi, the
hosts started Day 2 at a precarious
168/4. Azhar, in the company of Ravi
Shastri then put-on 214 runs for the
fifth wicket to help India declare at a
solid 437/7. However the slowness of
the track coupled with cautious
batting from both sides didn't yield a
result in the Test match. Azhar,
however would go on to compile two
more centuries in his next two Tests
even as India lost the series 1-2. Azhar,
in his 99-Test career, would go on to
score four more centuries at the Eden,
including a cracking 182 against the
visiting England side in the 1992-93 season.
