13th December 1966

Clive Lloyd debuts at Bombay

On this day in 1966, twenty-two year
old Clive Lloyd made his debut against
India at the Brabourne Stadium in
Mumbai. The 6'5" bowling destroyer
wasted no time in announcing his
arrival on the big stage. After a
Chandu Borde century gave India a
first-innings score of 296, Lloyd
stroked his way to 82 off 115 balls.
Despite BS Chandrasekhar's seven-for,
the West Indians were able to get a
first innings lead of 125. His cousin,
Lance Gibbs then took 4/67 as West
Indies were set a fourth innings target
off 192. Lloyd remained undefeated on
78 as the Caribbeans cruised to a six-
wicket win. Lloyd would then go on to
represent West Indies in 107 tests and
captain them to two World Cup titles in 1975 and 1979.

14th December 2003

Dravid-Laxman 2.0

Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman got
together at 85/4 after Australia, riding
on Ricky Ponting's 242 had posted 556
in the first innings of the second Test
match at Adelaide. The duo added 303
for the fifth wicket to revive the
ghosts of Kolkata 2001 for the Aussies.
The roles were reversed this time.
Laxman scored a typically classy 148
while Dravid, with his 233, had played
arguably India's finest innings in
overseas conditions. The partnership
set India up for a very famous Test
victory that Dravid saw through with
an equally composed 72. India drew
the Test series 1-1, after Australia
won the third Test in Melbourne. The
games in Brisbane and Sydney ended in draws.

18th December 1927

Ponsford does it again

On 18th of December 1927, Bill
Ponsford, known for notching up
monstrous hundreds at top of the
order broke his own record for highest
individual score in First-Class cricket by
thwacking 437 for Victoria against
Queensland at the Melbourne Cricket
Ground. Previously, he had made 429
by batting for eight hours in just his
third First-Class game in 1923. In fact,
December 1927 turned out to be a
golden month for the opener, as he
showed steadfastness and that one-
pointed focus to accrue 1,146 during
that month. Bill Ponsford and Brian
Lara remain the only two cricketers to
notch two scores above 400 in First
Class Cricket. In 2005, a statue of Bill
Ponsford was erected outside the
pavilions at the MCG to honour his
contributions to the sport.

Tendulkar records 50th Test ton

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar
scored a magnificent hundred under
pressure against South Africa at
Centurion on this day in 2010. South
Africa were right on top, having gained
a first innings lead in excess of 400
runs, but Tendulkar concentrated hard
and hit 13 fours and one six, en route
to scoring a 327-minute 111. It was his
50th hundred in Test match cricket.
However, South Africa went on to win
the match by an innings and 25 runs.

20th December 1983

..
Darren Sammy is born

..
He is the only other West Indies
captain, after Clive Llyod, to win a
World Cup. On this in 1983, Darren
Sammy was born in Micoud, St Lucia.
Having made his international debut at
age of 20, Sammy went on to captain
West Indies across all formats. His
hard-hitting ability, in addition to
medium-pace bowling, gave him the
credentials of being a fine all-rounder,
especially in the limited-overs formats.
In fact, it also gave him a good price tag
in many domestic T20 leagues across
the globe and is one of the few wanted
by many teams. Although he gave up
Test cricket recently, Sammy
continues to play the other two
formats and entertain the crowd ..
Happy birthday and many more happy returns of the day Darren Sammy :clap:clap:hs:hs:luv:luv:ohya:tup:tup:win:win ..

21st December 2014
..
Kris Srikkanth was born

..
A swashbuckling opening batsman,
Kris Srikkanth, was born on this day in
Madras (Chennai) in 1959. The right-
handed batsman made his
international debut at the age of 22
against England. Uniquely, his highest
scores in Test, ODI and List-A cricket
have all been 123. He top-scored the batting chart for India in the 1983
World Cup final and batted bravely against a devastating West Indies
bowling attack.
He also shares his birthday with the Little Master of Pakistan, Hanif Mohammad, who was born in 1934. Renowned for his solid defense, Hanif has the record for the longest innings in Test history. He batted for 970
minutes in his 337 against West Indies in 1957-58. Hanif - the original Little Master - also made 499 in first class cricket before being run-out on the 500th run.
.. Happy birthday "srika" and many more happy returns of the day :clap:hs:luv:tup:win:) ..

ABD and Faf almost chase down 458
..

On this day in 2013, South Africa and
India played out a fascinating final day
in Test history at Wanderers in
Johannesburg. Chasing a world record
458 in the final innings, the hosts
started the day on their overnight
score of 138/2. At the start of the day's
play, the young Indian team looked
poised to clinch a famous Test win as
South Africa were widely expected to
grind out for a draw, if possible. AB de
Villiers and Faf Du Plesis thought
otherwise. The duo struck magnificent
centuries and late in the final session,
South Africa were on course to win the
game. Then Ajinkya Rahane scored a
direct hit to run Du Plesis out. 16 were
left to get off 19 balls. With only Imran
Tahir and Morne Morkel left in the hut,
Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander
batted out the three remaining overs
amid loud boos from the stands.
Perhaps, it was destined to end as a draw.

23rd December 1984
..

The King's double

..
On this day in 1984, 'King' Vivian
Richards slammed a typically ruthless
double century in Melbourne, the first
double by a West Indian in Australia,
against an Australian pace bowling
attack that had Lawson, Hogg and
McDermott. Riding on Richards'
innings, West Indies put up a first
innings total of 479. Malcolm Marshall
then ripped through the Australian
batting line-up with a five-for, the last
six wickets falling for a mere 58 runs.
The Antiguan wasn't as successful the
second time around, falling to
McDermott for a second ball duck as
Australia held on to a draw by the skin
of their teeth, ending a sequence of 11
consecutive wins for the Caribbeans.
West Indies won the five-match Test
series 3-1 ..
