Sri Lanka clinch series win in Leeds

On this day in 2014, Sri Lanka
completed a historic triumph against
England with just a ball to spare in the
final day's play in Headingley.
Dhammika Prasad got a ball to rear off
a good length and James Anderson,
who'd survived nine overs without
scoring, fended awkwardly to
backward square where Rangana
Herath completed a simple catch,
sparking wild celebrations. By virtue of
the win, Sri Lanka completed a series
win in England for the first time (more
than one Test in a series). Incidentally,
Sri Lanka had survived a similar
predicament in the final over of the
first Test to save the Test match. The
architect of the win at Leeds was
skipper Angelo Mathews who followed
his first innings four-fer with a 160 in
the second innings to help Sri Lanka
set England a target of 350. England
failed to save the Test despite a brave
108* from Mooen Ali.

Kapil's Dev do the unthinkable

June 25th is a red-letter day in Indian
cricket history. For it was on this day in
1983, that an Indian team led by Kapil
Dev completed a remarkable upset
victory over two-time champions and
pre-tournament favourites West Indies
to win the Prudential World Cup.
Despite ending West Indies' unbeaten
streak in the World Cups enroute the
finals, India were rank outsiders
against Clive Lloyd's men in the final.
This was exacerbated by the fact that
they managed only 183 on the board
having been inserted into bat with Kris
Srikkanth top-scoring with 38. Viv
Richards blitzed a 28-ball 33 before
Kapil completed a stupendous catch
running backwards to send him back.
That triggered a collapse and the
mighty West Indies were bowled out
for 140. Mohinder Amarnath, bowling
his dibbly-dobbly medium-pacers, was
adjudged the man of the final having
scored 26 in addition to his match
winning figures of 3 for 12.

After 20 mins of play & by the 7th over England were 19/3

Today in 1983 India lift their first ever World Cup title when they beat West Indies by 43 runs. :ohya :ohya :ohya

Tendulkar scales Milestone 15000

It was on this day in 2007 that Sachin Tendulkar
completed his 15000th ODI run. Widely
regarded as one of the greatest
batsmen of the 50-over format,
Tendulkar was the first to surpass
several batting landmarks including
those of being the first to 10000, 11000
and so on. The 15000th came against
South Africa in the second of the
three-match ODI series played in
Belfast. Tendulkar played Andre Nel
towards mid-off and set off for a quick
single. The crowd at the Civil Service
Cricket Club duly broke into a
rapturous applause. Personally, for
Tendulkar, that innings continued a
disturbing trend that had crept into his
game that season - getting out in the
nineties. He was bowled by Thandi
Tshabalala but his 93 helped India
level the series 1-1.

1st July 1996

Match to remember for Kevan James

Hampshire's Kevan James picked up
four wickets in four balls on this day in
1996 in a tour match against India in
Southampton. He became the 31st
player to do so and also finished with a
fifer as he dismissed Ajay Jadeja (91),
Vikram Rathore (95), Sachin Tendulkar
(0), Rahul Dravid (0) and Sanjay
Manjrekar (0). James also went on to
score a century in the match to
become the first player to achieve the
unique feat of four wickets in four
balls and a century.

2nd July 1969

West Indies bowled out for 25

1, 0, 2, 2, 1, 6, 0, 0, 9, 0, 3, 1 bye - This
was how the Clive Lloyd-led West
Indies' scorecard read when they faced
Ireland in a one-day match, consisting
of two innings per side. Ireland pulled
off a major David-slaying-Goliath act
by bowling out West Indies for 25 on
this day in 1969 at Holm Field in Sion
Mills. Ireland, who scored 125/8 decl in
reply, won the match on the basis of
first-innings lead, with the Caribbean
team managing 78/4 in their second
innings. Ireland skipper Douglas
Goodwin picked up 5/6 in the first
innings and added two more to his
wickets tally in the second essay.

Today in 1996, Sourav Ganguly became the sixth player to achieve this feat. :luv :luv
