17th June 1999

The greatest ever semi-final

Termed as one of the greatest
matches ever in the history of cricket -
the second semi-final of the 1999
World Cup between Australia and
South Africa was full of drama and
excitement. A fantastic five-for from
Shaun Pollock had restricted Australia
to 213, a score they were able to reach
due to the combined brilliance of Steve
Waugh and Michael Bevan. Kallis'
masterclass resurrected South Africa
after Shane Warne's aggression but
the fateful run-out of Allan Donald,
who failed to respond to Lance
resulted into an unlikely tie. A superior
net run-rate in the Super Six stage
meant that Australia progressed to the
final, crushing South Africa's hopes.

Happy birthday "Shane Watson." He turns 35 today.

Unique record for Birthday boy Shane Watson.

the only player to win four consecutive player of the match awards in ICC event history

A Kapil Dev masterclass

Possibly one of the greatest ODI
innings by an Indian batsman, Kapil
Dev's brutal 175 not out against
Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup,
resurrected India's campaign in the
tournament. India were reduced to 17
for 5 by the intimidating duo of Peter
Rawson and Kevin Curran. However,
Kapil Dev's arrival at the crease
changed the entire tone of the innings
as he blasted his way to a spectacular
175 in just 138 deliveries, smashing 16
fours and six sixes in his knock. His
action-packed innings ensured India
posted a competitive 266/8 and
secured a 31-run victory over the
opposition.

Crash bang walloped

Underdogs storm Australia's party

2005
"The most embarrassing defeat in our sport history" was how Sydney's Daily Telegraph summed up a performance that reverberated around the globe. Bangladesh had been 500 to 1 outsiders for their opening encounter with Australia in the NatWest Series, but having restricted a lacklustre opposition to 249 for 5, they set about scripting a miracle. Led by the diminutive Mohammad Ashraful, whose even 100 was his maiden one-day century, they paced their chase to perfection. With seven required from the final over, Aftab Ahmed walloped Jason Gillespie out towards the River Taff for a massive six. A scrambled single later, the great upset had been completed.

Happy Birthday "Kyle Abbott". He turns 29 today.

Today in 1983, Kapil Dev scored an unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe and became the first Indian to score a century in ODIs.

Botham's finest moment

Sir Ian Botham put up one of the finest
performance of his career when he
picked up 8 for 34 against Pakistan in
the second innings at Lord's and
completely destroyed the sub-
continent team. England won the
match by an innings and 120 runs. His
figures, in fact, after all these years,
are still the best by any bowler at
Lord's. This series was important for
Botham's career as it turned things
around for him and he was well and
truly acknowledged as an all-rounder.

  • The sedate World Cup final

After an exciting semi-final against
South Africa, Australia might have
expected a tough resistance from
Pakistan but instead the 1999 World
Cup turned out to be a damp squib.
Australia romped to an easy victory by
skittling out the sub-continent team
for a mere 132. Shane Warne, at his
vintage best, picked up 4 for 33 and all
other bowlers chipped as well. In reply,
Australia chased the target with
nearly 30 overs to spare and won by 8
wickets. It was the beginning of the
Australian dominance that continued
for nearly a decade.
