West Indies are first World Champions

On this day in 1975, West Indies
became the first winners of the Cricket
World Cup when they defeated
Australia by 17 runs in an engrossing
encounter at the home of cricket,
Lord's. Clive Lloyd, the bespectacled
Caribbean skipper, masterminded the
victory with a brilliant 85-ball 102.
Rohan Kanhai played the perfect foil
to Lloyd's belligerence with a classy
55. Despite Gary Gilmour's 5 for 48,
West Indies had piled on 291 runs in
the 60 overs. Alan Turner and Ian
Chappell set about the chase earnestly
before both were run-out by Vivian
Richards. Richards made up for his
failure with the bat by running Greg
Chappell out as well and Australia's
chase soon fizzled out. Dennis Lillee
and Jeff Thompson fought gamely but
another run-out mean Australia had
fallen short by 17-runs. West Indies
would go on to win another World Cup
undefeated before losing their third
final to India.

Caribbean power at Lord's

The first World Cup final, and a Caribbean coronation. West Indies were always in control against Australia once their captain, Clive Lloyd, belted 102 off only 85 balls. Chasing 291, Australia's work was undone by a succession of run-outs. Three came from brilliant work by Viv Richards in the covers alone, including both Chappells. At 233 for 9 it was as good as over, but Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson jangled one or two nerves, until the fifth and final run-out finished things late on the longest day of the year. The winning margin was 17 runs, 13 of which came from Thomson no-balls. The game, which started at 10.30am, finished at 8.43pm.

On this day in 2009, Pakistan won their first World T20 title

Dada arrives in style

On this day in 1996, Sourav Ganguly
completed a famous century on Test
match debut at Lord's against England.
Replacing Sanjay Manjrekar at No.3 in
India's batting line-up following the
defeat in the first Test at Edgbaston,
Ganguly stroked his way to a fluent
131 after England had notched up 344
in their first innings. Ganguly was ably
supported by fellow-debutant and
future Test great Rahul Dravid, who
was dismissed agonizingly short of a
century on debut hismelf. Ganguly's
foray into the Lord's honours board
helped India take a first innings lead
and subsequently draw the match.
The stylish left-hander went on to
score another century in the next
game in Nottingham but couldn't help
India prevent the 1-0 series loss. He
and Dravid, along with Sachin
Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, would go
on to form the famous batting quartet
for India in the early 2000s.

Today in 1996, 20 yrs go, Rahul Dravid faced his 1st ball in Tests.
He has faced most balls 31258 & spent most time @ the crease 44152 mins

Dhoni completes ICC Treble

On this in 2013, MS Dhoni became the
first captain to win all ICC Trophies
when India edged England out in a
thriller in Edgbaston to clinch the the
Champions Trophy. India went into the
tournament with minimal expectations
following a long-drawn out saga of
spot-fixing in the IPL. A new-look
opening combination of Shikhar
Dhawan and Rohit Sharma sparkled to
propel into the finals. The final,
against hosts England, was reduced to
a 20-over-a-side affair because of rain.
Cameos from Virat Kohli (43) and
Ravindra Jadeja (33) took India to 129
after Ravi Bopara's dibbly-dobblies had
kept the batsmen tied down. R Ashwin,
Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant Sharma
picked up two-wickets apiece to clinch
a five-run win in the last over. By
virtue of the win, Dhoni became the
first captain to win the World Cup, T20
WC and Champions Trophy.
