India conquer Lord's

India registered their first win in 11
attempts at the home of cricket. There
were centuries for Graham Gooch and
Dilip Vengsarkar as the visitors
managed to eke out a 47-run lead at
the end of the first innings. If Chetan
Sharma was the wrecker-in-chief in
the first innings, taking 5/64, it was
the turn of Kapil Dev to destroy
England in the second innings.
India were set a target of 134 and
stumbled early, losing their openers
with just 31 on the board. They
recovered briefly, but things looked
dodgy at 110/5. Skipper Kapil Dev
walked in and biffed a 10-ball 23 to
lead India to history.

Happy Birthday "Albie Morkel". He turns 35 today.
Happy Birthday "Khurram Manzoor". He turns 30 today.
Happy Birthday "Dane Vilas". He turns 31 today.

Saqlain's hat-trick
Only the second man to get three in three balls twice

1999
A World Cup hat-trick for Saqlain Mushtaq, as Pakistan thrashed Zimbabwe by 148 runs in the Super Six match at The Oval. Given the men he dismissed, it's one he might remember quite sheepishly: Henry Olonga (one-day international average: 4.36), Adam Huckle (2.25), and Pommie Mbangwa (4.71) were never in danger of doing much tail-wagging. But a World Cup hat-trick is a World Cup hat-trick: this was only the second, and Saqqy also became the second man (Wasim Akram was the first) to take two hat-tricks in ODIs.

The costly drop

South Africa's World Cup woes
continued when they messed up the
chance of pushing Australia out of the
1999 World Cup. Steve Waugh, in his
usual calm swagger, has supposedly
uttered these famous words - "How
does it feel to drop the World Cup,
Herschelle?" - to Gibbs. The latter had
prematurely celebrated catching
Waugh at mid-wicket, a grave mistake
as the Australian batsman had went
on to make a stunning 120 not out. He
had arrived at the crease when
Australia were stuttering at 48 for 3.
His innings not only kept them in the
World Cup but also placed them above
South Africa in the Super Six stage.
Four days later when the two teams
met again in the in famous tied semi-
final, South Africa were forced to bow
out because of that one minute detail.

A slow torture

In only the second ever World Cup in
cricket history, England bowled out
Canada for a measly 45, taking 41
overs to do so. Canada's Franklyn Davis
was the only player to reach double
figures and England's Chris Old
registered stunning figures of
10-5-8-4. Not only did the hosts
secured a thumping eight-wicket
victory but they also achieved the
target with more than 46 overs to
spare.

Birth of Maurice Odumbe

Maurice Odumbe, one of Kenya's
greatest captain was born on this day.
Under his leadership, Kenya defeated
West Indies by 73 runs in the 1996
World Cup - one of the greatest upsets
in cricket history. Odumbe won the
Man of the Match for that game for his
stunning bowling figures of 10-3-15-3.
Kenya also went on to qualify for the
semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup
when he was the skipper.
Unfortunately, his illustrious career
had a sad end when he was handed a
five-year ban for his relations with a
bookie.
