Difficult pitch for IPL teams as money-making becomes hard

India is home to cricket fans and with Indian Premier League (IPL) adding entertainment to the sport, people have nothing to complain about. But the IPL teams surely have many things they aren't happy about -- especially the losses some of the teams are making.

According to data analytics firm Tofler, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) has not been minting enough money in the recent IPL outings. The team incurred losses of about Rs 30 crore in financial year 2014-15 on income of Rs 94 crore. The income of the team remained flat last season at around Rs 90 crore.

Competition is tough between franchises to get the best players on board. But, for this the owners have to spend big bucks. RCB was hit hard by the huge player fees in 2014-2015 which came up to Rs 67 crore.

Delhi Daredevils has also been on the same page as RCB when it comes to not generating profits. The franchise saw their revenue decline after the team finished at the bottom in IPL 2014. Their revenue fell from Rs 159 crore in FY14 to Rs 117 crores in FY15. The company also reported a loss of Rs 20 crore in the period after being in the green the previous year. The profit in FY14 stood at Rs 7 crore.

Incidentally, in 2013 also Delhi Daredevils were at the bottom of the points table.

Following suit, King’s XI Punjab saw its profits shrinking and reported a loss of approximately Rs 9.4 crore in 2016. The company owned by Bollywood actor Preity Zinta along with Ness Wadia and Mohit Burman, reported net profit at Rs 12.7 crore in 2015 to Rs 3.3 crore in 2016.

IPL has always been surrounded by controversies which has resulted in sponsorships reducing in the last two years.

The main source of income for the IPL teams is in the form of central rights -- the share in the IPL revenue that the BCCI pays to the teams. The other way the teams earn money is through sponsorships. Then, there is sale of tickets, income from tradingplayers with other franchises, merchandise sales and also the prize amount which a team gets after winning a season.

Amazon, Vodafone, Vivo among sponsors signed for IPL 2017: Sony

Broadcaster Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN) has signed up 11 sponsors, including Amazon and mobile handset maker Vivo, so far as it targets over Rs 1,200 crore advertisement revenue from the tenth season of IPL .

The official broadcast partner of IPL is confident that the number of sponsors this year will be more than the last edition of the T20 league.

E-commerce major Amazon, mobile handset maker Vivo and telecom giant Vodafone will be the presenting sponsors, while Ceat, wire-maker Polycab, Yamaha Motorcycles, Vimal Pan Masala, MakeMytrip, Parle Agro's Frooti, Voltas and Yes Bank are associate sponsors signed up so far.

"Last year we had 12 sponsors, this year we have already got 11. We still have over a month to go, so we will obviously cross 12 this time, which would probably be one of the best seasons that IPL has ever had," SPN President, Network Sales and International Business, Rohit Gupta told .

In terms of revenue, he said: "Last year it was slightly higher than Rs 1,100 crore and a 10 per cent increase is what we are looking for this year."

The tenth season of IPL will kick off on April 5 and the final will be played on May 21.

When asked about advertising rates, he said: "We took a 10 per cent increase this year over last year."

The sponsorship packages are between Rs 5.65 lakh to Rs 5.75 lakh per 10 second, he said.

For HD channel, the spot rates for other advertisers are Rs 6 lakh per 10 seconds, while the same for standard definition (SD) channels is Rs 2 lakh, he added.

Commenting on advertisement inventories, he said as of now 70 per cent have been sold out and "in the next 10 days we will get around 80-85 per cent".

When asked whether demonetisation has any impact on advertisers' response to IPL, he replied in negative and said: "All the brands which were in IPL earlier have come back and these are from next year budgets because it starts in April."

"Also, whenever the economy is a little tough, trophies like IPL do better because there is no risk involved in the investment on IPL because you know its going to do well, you know the kind of reach it is going to get," he added.

State associations to CoA: No money, no hosting IPL

The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) is set to face another bouncer. This time, the impending 'headache' pertains to the Indian Premier League (IPL), the game's cash cow from which they've consciously tried to stay away so far.

The state associations of the BCCI, many of who have voiced their concern over COA going beyond its remit in following the SC order, say they "will not be in a position to part with the infrastructure" for the IPL matches to be conducted over the next two months if they are not paid for the same. The current dispensation at BCCI, however, is convinced that this is merely "another way of creating nuisance".
