RE: Indian Premier League 2017 {S-10} Discussion & Updates
J Arun Kumar appointed KXIP's batting coach
Karnataka head coach J Arun Kumar has been appointed the batting coach of Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 42-year old, who hasn't coached an IPL team so far, said he had been in touch with his Indian Airlines teammate Virender Sehwag, KXIP's head of cricket operations, for over a month.
"(The discussions were on) for over a month before I got a call officially and things fell in place. I had asked him (Sehwag) last year to let me know if there was an opportunity. So, he called me up and offered this. It was very nice of him," Arunkumar told ESPNcricinfo.
"It is a good learning curve for me. It is always good to interact with different heads and talk to the players. Sehwag and the franchise team are coming on the 19th for the IPL auctions; we will meet then and discuss the way forward. It is a whole new experience. It will take my coaching to a different level. I am looking forward to it," he added.
The former opening batsman has represented Karnataka, South Zone and India A during his first-class career which spanned 109 matches. In his five seasons as a coach with Karnataka, he guided the team to back-to-back trebles. Karnataka won the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Irani Cup for two years in succession in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Arunkumar will have a major job at hand, especially following the departure of Sanjay Bangar, who was responsible for building the core set of players in the last three seasons.
Kings XI Punjab, who reached the final in the 2014 edition, followed it up with two disappointing shows in the subsequent seasons, where they finished at the bottom of the points table.
